Pints of Lube & Miles of Bondage Rope: Fun Facts From the World of Sex

As we approach the final month of 2022 (I know, when did that happen?!), we have cast a watchful and pensive eye over the past year to pick out 5 of our favourite fun facts from the world of sex. After all, we all want to hear news that makes us smile, and there’s nothing that makes us happier than pints (of lube).
You might not know this, but lube is one of the most important parts of any sexual act, and should be used always. Using a sex toy? Use lube. Having penetrative sex? Use lube. Changing a car engine? You guessed it!
Even with this knowledge, it might shock you to learn the amount of lube used every year – we dug into our data to find that since the start of this year we have sold 61,359 pints of lube. For those wondering, that’s the equivalent of 107,000 litres, or roughly the amount of beer England fans will drink during the first minute of any given football match.
Britain is a bondage-loving nation – whether a first-timer experimenting with an eye-mask or an expert wheeling out the chastity belt, we love it. So much so, that when you combine the length of bondage rope sold since the start of 2022, you would have enough to stretch from London to Manchester – that’s 155 miles of pure BDSM.
You can’t spell BDSM without fantasy – well, I suppose you technically can, but the two undoubtedly go hand-in-hand. The 2022 Lovehoney global survey uncovered the top fantasies of people in the UK, and the results might shock you (or indeed, they might be exactly what you would expect). There is no judging of fantasies here at Lovehoney, but the results certainly make for interesting reading:
In the UK, the top fantasy for men was found to be ‘sex with someone who is not my partner’ with a whopping 42% choosing this. The 2nd most common sexual fantasy was simply ‘oral sex’ (37%), followed by ‘sex with a stranger’ (33%). In comparison, the most common sexual fantasy in the UK for women is ‘romantic sex’ (34%), followed by ‘passionate or meaningful sex’ in second place (with 32%), and ‘sex in a public place’ in third, with 31% of the votes.
Our global survey turned out all sorts of wonderful results. Following the success of the lionesses at this year’s Euros, there was yet another achievement on the cards for women in England (and the rest of the UK), as they were found to be Masturbation Champions Of The World.
Yes, UK women were found to masturbate more frequently than any other nation, at an average of 100 times per year, followed closely by Spain and the USA (98 times each), and Germany and Italy (82 times each). UK’s men were unable to replicate the success however, with the USA coming out on top here (167 times a year), followed by Spain (164) and Switzerland (162). The UK contingent are languishing down in 8th, at 145 times per year (which shows just how stark the Masturbation Gap actually is).
Last but not least, while we’re on the topic of rankings, we also uncovered who has bought the most anal toys this year, where coming in top is thanks to the bottom. The United Kingdom has once again done its nation proud, having bought the most anal toys, followed by the USA, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. Good job everyone.
