Is sex better when it's wetter? Lovehoney finds out if the weather affects our sex drive

With an unusually wet start to 2024, most of us have avoided spending time outdoors. But a new survey has found that more than a quarter of us are using this as an opportunity to spend time between the sheets with a partner or sex toy instead, and ‘get wet’ indoors too…

Here in the UK, we are very used to a mixed weather forecast and a particularly wet winter. But does the wet weather affect more than just our mood and plans; does it alter our sex drive? Are we more likely to reach into the drawer for a dildo when it’s stormy outside?

To answer this, we surveyed 1,000 adults in the UK and asked if they are more likely to get into bed with a partner or sex toys when the weather is rainy, stormy or wet.

And as it turns out, the extra damp weather at the start of 2024 hasn’t put a dampener on libidos across the UK - in fact, quite the opposite - with the wet weather making us, well, wet in the bedroom too!

Over a quarter (26%) said they are more likely to spend time in bed with a partner or sex toy when the weather is rainy, stormy and wet. This figure was highest amongst 18-24 year olds, with 43% of Gen Zers saying yes, they spend more time in bed in wetter weather because “what else is there to do”.

To explain why the weather is affecting our libido, Annabelle Knight, our sex and relationships expert has shared some insight:

“When there is less to do outside, it’s natural for us to spend more time at home, and as a result; in bed! So, we are not surprised to see many say that they are hornier when there’s a downpour outside.

“It’s a great time to consider spicing up your sex life and making sure this extra time in bed - either solo or with a partner - is more about pleasure and sexual satisfaction than snoozing! For those new to sex toys, it’s a good time to consider experimenting with some new toys. And for those with a partner, a vibrator or dildo can be an exciting way to tease and increase pleasure for both.”
