Universal USB Charger
Electrifying little charger
Reviewed: 28 July 2015 by FlyingSmurf, a Straight Single Male
Delivery: up to the usual discreet standards of Lovehoney. This time, a well bound up padded envelope with this single tester item nestling inside.
Packaging, and in the box: a plain white little cardboard box with "Universal USB Charger" on it, as well as someones stock code and an ever ubiquitous barcode. Inside the box and in true pass-the-parcel fashion, another layer, this one a little (recyclable) plastic bag, within which is the charger itself.
What's not in the box: any cables. You'll need to rely on whatever you already have from existing toys and devices. There are also no instructions, although given the ubiquity of chargers and their simplicity that's not a real surprise. Keep it dry and away from water and liquids!
Physical description: it's a white plastic cased charger with (assuming it's plugged into a vertically mounted power socket as found on most walls) a UK plug on the back and standard USB type A socket on the top. It measures c. 6x6x5cm (including the plug pins), and feels well enough made.
How it works and what it does: it converts mains voltage to the standard USB charging voltage of 5.0V DC with a maximum charging current of 0.5A (500mA). On the mains voltage side it's rated 100-240V AC, 50/60Hz, so could be used most places in the world provided you've got a plug adapter (the plug part of this charger is fixed - no interchangeable parts).
On a whim, I checked the output voltage of this charger (never realised that my multimeter would be useful for reviewing Lovehoney products!), and it came out at 5.1V. This is completely within the USB spec of 5V±5%, a range of 4.75V to 5.25V. No worries here.
This current rating was the standard for USB 1.x/2.0, but isn't as high as the chargers for some more recent devices can supply (a popular fruit related tablet charger can provide c. 2A (2000mA), as can the charger that came with my non-fruity 'phone). Does this matter? Not at all - USB chargers are interchangeable. It'll just take longer to charge things with a lower rated charger.
In use: it charges. There was no problem with any USB cable, toy or gadget I tried it with over several days. It didn't get unduly warm, it didn't buzz or whine or whistle like some little gadgets, and it didn't threaten to empty the drinks cabinet and run off with the dog (thankfully). It just unobtrusively charged my electronic devices.
Other stuff sometimes covered in reviews doesn't really seem to apply much:
- how long do the batteries last? (it's for charging things not discharging them)
- does it smell/taste/feel nice? (didn't try any intimate physical interaction with it, and not about to)
- who would find it useful? (anyone needing another USB charger, whether for sex toys or anything else)
- was it easy to clean? (it'll dry dust easily)
- It just does what it's meant to - charge things.
- A higher charging current would be nice, but it's a minor point at this price.
- Bottom line
- Charges toys, gadgets and devices without fuss.
