I wanted to buy a book on cunnilingus as a hint to my boyfriend. I am also interested in reading about sexual practises, even if I am familiar with them. I am not a fan of books with pornographic-style photographs to illustrate with the text, so I was looking for a book which had diagrams rather than photographs. This book suited my needs completely.
As I said this book was bought as a hint to my boyfriend to give me more head. I wrapped it up complete with a selection of different flavoured lubricants from Lovehoney and presented it as one cheeky gift. Although we are not novices to oral sex, I wanted to use this method as a way of asking for more.
Sexual aspects are a topic I believe we should all pursue continuously and learn as much about ourselves as possible. I wanted to read this book to learn about my own anatomy, as well as to teach my partner and have him learn some new tricks. The author has fulfilled these needs perfectly and has written in a style which is totally unbiased and accessible for everybody. The only limits are safety, which she stresses in a very caring manner.
This 178 page (content) book is written by blogger Violet Blue and also includes a foreword by Margaret Cho. It is split into 12 very varying chapters (not including the foreword and introduction) which discuss different aspects of cunnilingus separately. There are also 14 illustrations.
The foreword and introduction are a beautiful collection of two separate peoples' feelings towards cunnilingus, in the perspective of both giving and receiving. Both authors communicate with the reader in a friendly manner, allowing them to feel relaxed and looking forward to reading the pages to come. Violet explains in the introduction her background and how she set about writing the book. By the time I finished reading these two sections, I was very excited indeed and did not put the book down for a few chapters (I'm a terrible reader)!
Chapter 1: One Act, Many Pleasures
In this chapter Violet states the basics and benefits of oral sex on a woman and how it can bring satisfaction for some women that they cannot gain elsewhere. She references other books and reflects on societies which illustrated oral sex as early as 300BC! A diagram and several quotes relating to the chapters, of everyday peoples' attitudes towards oral sex. The chapter includes subheadings such as Receiving, Giving, Increasing Intimacy and Enhancing Lovemaking. She brings up the issues of intimacy and vulnerability women feel towards receiving cunnilingus. Which leads nicely onto the second chapter...
Chapter 2: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Getting Head
Violet tells a story about her friend who hated receiving oral sex and then goes on to discuss how many women have issues when it comes to this act, including relative quotes and reasons behind why there is this agenda for some women. She discusses four common fears and attempts to put any woman’s mind at ease with facts, opinions and quotes of everyday people, as well as advice on how to break these negative thinking habits. There is a good two pages on techniques for building confidence and working through these issues such as by masturbating. I found these pages particularly helpful and reassuring. These techniques then continue through several more paragraphs throughout the chapter, including breathing, pressure points, kegels, being a great lick-ee etc. This chapter is written in a style which is as spoken to a woman, however I feel it is essential for any man to read through this chapter as well as it will help him to help his woman.
To my surprise this chapter was followed by a short erotica story, to aid the masturbation techniques! Written by Alison Tyler.
Chapter 3: Anatomy for Pleasure
This scientific chapter, including 3 diagrams, explains the physiology of a woman and greatly stresses that each woman is very different and that there is no right or wrong. It includes many quotes of people describing how their partners' genitila looks and how much they love it. Again Violet references other books. The clitoris, sexual response cycle, G-spot and ejaculation are discussed.
Chapter 4: Health Considerations
Violet clears up any misconceptions that cunnilingus is a safe practice and explains the basics of several infections such as HIV, hepatitis A, B and C, herpes, HPV, bacterial STD's such as gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, syphilis as well as infections such as trichomonaisis, bacterial vaginosis and vulviovaginal candidasis. Rimming/analingus is noted and Violet discusses the importance of safety and also letting any partners know if you have any infections.
Violet encourages many forms of protection, using facts, very thorough advice of a medical manner, and is supported again by quotes and diagrams, as well as tips to incorporate safe sex into good sex and even a crafty "how to" project! She portrays that safe sex can be very erotic! This chapter taught me things I didn't know for sure!
Chapter 5: Tastes and Textures
Violet expresses the varying beauty in the tastes and textures of the female genitilia, backed again by several quotes from everyday people. Hair is a strong topic in this chapter and Violet offers a step by step instruction on how to shave pubic hair and issues on what can occur with doing this. She also discusses waxing, razor burn, beard burn and how to prevent this.
Smell and taste is reported on in a deliciously unbiased manner and teaches us facts of our pH balance and the effects this can have on the taste of our juices. Here includes another short erotica by Alison Tyler.
Chapter 6: Cunning Linguistics: Getting Started
Violet discusses boundaries within couples who may be new to cunnilingus, and how to talk to your partner to introduce cunnilingus to a reluctant receiver. It includes straightforward questions to ask your lover what they like, as well as some very sexy foreplay games!
Some daring suggestions, this chapter is a must read!
Chapter 7: Oral Seduction
This chapter is basically a guide for what to do!! I wont spoil any of it by giving any clues, buy the book! This fun loving, anticipating chapter is followed by another short erotica by Alison Tyler.
Chapter 8: As you Like it
This chapter discusses many positions to perform in, help for those who are injured or disabled (wow!) tongue and jaw cramp, sex toys, the G-spot. Follows with another short erotica by Alison Tyler.
Chapter 9: Tricks or Treats: Advanced Techniques
I love this one! Getting down to the science of things Violet shares with us some erotic pressure points to increase sexual energy and awareness, heighten sensitivity, enhance orgasm, increase pleasure and circulation! She gives pointers on sensation play, with hot and cold, cool and tingling, pain and restraint. Violet also introduces more daring methods of sexual behaviour such as rimming, anal penetration (both fairly bulky paragraphs) clit pumping and water sports. Followed by another short erotica by Alison Tyler. She’s good to her readers isn’t she!?
Chapter 10: Independent Study: Erotic Books and Videos
Violet Blue gives us much more than we asked for in her guide to cunnilingus, this chapter is full of descriptions and resources of different types of pornographic videos and books, including suggestions of “How to” videos! It is a great eye opener to those wanting to experiment with porn but want to know good directors etc.
Chapter 11: Resources
Full of sex shops contact information! As this is an American book, some retailers may be unavailable although Violet has included research into European stores and online sites accessible for everybody.
Chapter 12: References
The ‘should be boring bit’ which has been a gold mine of further information!! Sharing is caring!
The book closes with a paragraph about Violet Blue and other books available from her.
It has been a great read. Beautifully written but easy to keep on track with. So much depth and information filled with care and encouragement. I wholly recommend! Now off to get the boyfriend to read it, whilst I order The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio!
- How much care was put into making it "extra". Wonderful!
- To pick any tiny fault, it was American so a tiny "language" barrier.
- Bottom line
- A must have! I am now a Violet Blue fan!

As a man who enjoys giving oral, I found this book really quite interesting and and insightful.
While covering the basics very well, it is an interesting read. While in some parts there is a focus on being the receiver or "lick-ee", which I don't find particularly helpful personally, but it is still very interesting and it helps put you in the right mindset to do that particular deed.
Covering topics like safety and anatomy, it is very fun and it is a very informative. The use of diagrams is a brilliant way for the reader work out how and where to focus on best.
It took me a short time to finish the boo, but I will definitely re-read it several times. With this book there is no excuse to having a sloppy or a half-arsed game when it comes to getting down to business.
- Interesting and insightful, not a long or arduous read at all. Covers basics well.
- Has quite a lot on being the receiver which isn't very useful for me.
- Bottom line
- I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of improving their oral skills.

Bit of a bore

Okay so after reading the review I decided to buy the book. I have to say it just drones on., a lot. It's extremely basic and doesn't actually tell you any techniques.
It also has 4 short 'erotic' stories in which I deem to be awful and pointless. If I had my time again I wouldn't waste my money on this.
It tells you things you already know and talks about things that aren't relevant.
Save your money.
- Not much.
- Most of it. Terrible.
- Bottom line
- Waste of money.
