The lights are dim, your lingerie is on, and a smooth playlist is vibing in the background. If you’re open to turning up the heat on this intimate moment, let’s light up a massage candle.

As they burn, massage candles melt into pools of skin-safe massage oil – usually with the added bonus of calming, natural scents filling the air. Using the warm oil on each other can be both relaxing and arousing; a soothing sexy way to reconnect, whether you decide to move onto sex afterwards or not.

In this guide, find out how to use massage candles and how to keep the experience safe. We’ll also get into wax play and the benefits of sensual massage in your relationship.

Only got time for a quickie?

Keen to get started? Here's the lowdown on how to use massage candles. Get the basics here or read on to dig into the details:

  • Massage candles are designed to melt at a low temperature into a warm, skin-safe massage oil.

  • They’re a great way to explore intimacy without sex. Use them to show appreciation for your lover, relax together, and gently turn up arousal.

  • Light your candle for about 15 minutes to let it melt. Before you play, blow the candle out and let the oil cool slightly to make sure it’s not too hot for your lover’s skin.

  • You can up the ante with a massage wand. These toys deliver deep, rumbling vibrations to increase blood flow and encourage muscle relaxation (or arousal).

  • Remember, massage candles aren’t a replacement for lube. Massage oils aren’t usually designed for internal use, and they can damage condoms, so pick a body-safe water-based lube if you’re transitioning to sex.

How do massage candles work?

Massage candles are specifically designed to be skin-safe and, when lit, melt into oil that you can rub into your partner’s skin. They usually come with pour spouts to help you direct the drizzle.

“Massage oil candles are typically made from natural ingredients like soy wax, shea butter, or almond oil,” says our sex and relationships expert, Annabelle Knight. “These ingredients melt at low temperatures and can be absorbed into the skin, leaving it feeling nourished and moisturised.”

Once your massage candle cools down, it solidifies back into wax (just like a regular candle), so you can put it back on your shelf for next time. Keep reading for tips on how to use yours!

Feel the temperature rising

How to use massage candles

You don’t need to be a massage pro to make the most of massage oils and candles. It’s all about slowing down and showing your lover how much you appreciate them – and their body!

Pick a stable surface for your candle

Clear away any clutter from your dresser or bedside table to make sure your candle has a safe, stable surface to sit on when lit. Taking a minute to set things up properly means less chance of spills or fire, so you can both relax into the experience.

Put down a towel or waterproof blanket

Most massage candles produce a natural oil that’s easily absorbed into the skin. However! All oil is tricky to clean out of fabric, so if you have nice bedding and you don’t want to ruin it, throw down an old towel. Otherwise, you can get a waterproof blanket so you’re not too distracted by the possibility of spills.

We love the Liberator Fascinator Throw, which looks and feels just like a luxurious cosy blanket, but has a secret moisture-proof internal layer for soaking up spills. It’s so worth the investment if you’re always worried about lube or semen stains on your bedding – or if either of you has the tendency to squirt.

Light the candle and let it melt

Let your candle burn until the melted oil reaches the edges of the container. This helps prevent tunnelling – where wax only melts in the middle of the candle, leaving unused wax around the sides. (Do this for regular scented candles too, you’ll get more out of them.)

Most massage candles only need around 15 to 30 minutes to melt enough oil for a massage. Avoid leaving yours lit for an hour or longer, because this can affect the quality of the oils and fragrances (and use up oil you could save for the next session).

Blow it out and let it cool slightly

Always blow out the flame and let your candle cool slightly before you pour any oil. We’re talking 60-90 seconds, while your partner gets comfy on the bed.

Massage candles are specially formulated to melt at a lower temperature than standard candles, so the oil is comfortably warm rather than scalding – but it's still worth waiting a minute or two before using it, just to be safe.

Pour the oil into your hands

Rather than drizzling the massage oil straight onto your lover’s body, use the pour spout to tip it into your palm and rub your hands together. This helps to distribute the warmth evenly, which means your partner can relax without unexpectedly hot oil taking them by surprise.

Using your hands also makes the experience more about connection between you and your partner – rather than the sensation of the oil being poured on their back. Either way can be fun and sexy, but if you want to help ground and relax your lover, try it hands first.

Massage using circular motions

Start with slow, gentle movements, and use the flats of your hands to spread the oil across larger areas like the shoulders, back and thighs. “Go slower than you think you need to,” recommends our sexpert, Annabelle. “When you rush a massage, it can make your partner feel like you don’t really want to be there.”

Taking your time turns a quick back rub into a therapeutic, bonding experience. Try circular motions with your thumb pads or knuckles to help soothe tired muscles, mixed with long, sweeping strokes that feel relaxing and nurturing. Use a wand massager to relieve tension

Once marketed as massage devices, wand vibrators can genuinely help ease tight shoulders, aching calves or tension in the lower back. The large stimulation head is designed to offer low-frequency, rumbling vibrations over a wide surface area, increasing blood flow and releasing stiff muscles.

Since the head of the vibrator is large, it distributes the pressure evenly across your skin, causing sensations that are deep and comforting rather than buzzy. You can trace it over calves, thighs, glutes (that’s your butt), and any erogenous zones.

Start on a lower setting (they’re pretty powerful!) and gradually dial up the intensity if it feels good. It’s OK for your toy to touch the massage oil, as it won’t damage the material. Just make sure you give the wand a thorough clean before using it on anyone’s genitals (more on why below).

Not sure where to start with larger toys? Read up on how to use a wand vibrator, and you’ll be wielding one confidently in no time.

Wash hands or toys before foreplay

If things are heating up and you want to move onto sex, it’s worth having a quick reset. Most massage candles are made with fragrance oils that aren’t designed to be used on your sensitive genital areas.

After your massage, wash your hands and clean any toys that have come into contact with massage oil – sex toy wipes can make quick work of this. Grab a water-based lube for drizzling over sex toys and genitals.

Are massage candles safe?

Yes! Massage candles are designed to be used on skin and are safe when you follow the instructions. They’re usually made with natural ingredients and have a low melting point, which means the wax shouldn’t get too hot and can be rubbed into your skin.

That said, it's always worth testing the oil on your palm or wrist before you use it to make sure it's a comfortable temperature. You can also do a patch test on your skin to make sure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients.

To do a patch test, first clean your skin with a mild soap and apply a pea-sized drop of the oil from your massage candle. Wait for 24-48 hours to check if there’s any irritation, redness, or itching. If everything’s clear, you’re good to go!

Even if your patch test goes well, steer clear of using massage candle oil directly on genitals. If you're using condoms, remember that oil-based products can weaken latex – so switch to a compatible lubricant for penetrative sex.

“Oils can break condoms and trap bacteria on the skin, which might cause irritation or infection,” explains Annabelle. “But you can get brilliant, body safe lubes that are designed for sensual play.” If you’re not already a lube evangelist like us, check out why it’s so sexy and get tips for using it in our guide: How to Use Lube.

Can massage candles be used for wax play?

For the uninitiated, wax play is a form of temperature play where you melt wax from a candle directly onto your (or your partner’s) skin. The hot wax hitting your skin delivers a sharp, thrilling sting that fades quickly.

You can use massage candles for wax play, but the sensations and experience will be slightly different.

While massage candles are made from natural oils that melt into a warm, moisturising oil, wax play candles are made from paraffin-based waxes that burn hotter.

“For couples curious about wax play, massage candles offer a gentler starting point,” says Annabelle. “They combine the anticipation of warm wax with skin-nourishing oils, allowing you to explore new sensations in a way that feels comfortable and beginner-friendly.”

However, the oil from massage candles isn't designed to harden into wax at body temperature. So, if you do use one, your experience won’t quite be the same. For instance, you won’t get to feel the sensation of hot wax solidifying on your skin, or derive satisfaction from picking or scraping off the wax after it cools down.

Why use massage candles with your partner

Between long workdays, chores, and accidental doomscrolling, it’s easy to let intimacy slip down the priority list. Massage candles can encourage you to slow down and focus on your partner. There’s no rushing burn time or a good massage, after all! Check out these benefits while you’re waiting for your candle to melt.

Relieve muscle tension

Even a gentle massage can improve circulation and help release tense muscles. Oil makes the hands glide more easily over the skin, helping your partner relax. The warmth of a candle can encourage blood flow even more, making it easier to release tension in common problem areas like the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Destress

The ritual of lighting a candle and waiting for it to melt may help slow your mind and body. Some candles are scented with essential oils for a soothing aromatherapy vibe that encourages you to breathe deeply and relax.

Slowing your breathing and relaxing your muscles may help activate the body’s “rest and digest” response (aka the parasympathetic nervous system) which supports recovery from stress and even contributes to sexual arousal – more on that below.

Build arousal

When you’re busy, stressed, or caring for others, it can be difficult to switch gears and feel sexy. Massage candles naturally slow down the tempo and build anticipation in the bedroom.

Warm massage oil makes every sweep and press of the hands feel more sensual. And, when you’re in “rest and digest” mode, this can encourage blood flow to the penis and clitoris, which might make you feel more turned on.

As the masseuse, you can also gradually roam your hands over erogenous zones like the inner thighs, breasts, and nipples. Just be sure to let your partner know that a massage doesn’t always have to mean sex – the main thing is connection and relaxation.

Deepen intimacy

You won’t always be in the mood for sex, but physical intimacy is still important. “Physical touch outside of sex is an important part of nurturing intimacy in a long-term relationship,” says Annabelle. It’s a way to build trust and show your partner that intimacy isn’t transactional (i.e. you don’t always need to be up for sex to feel close to each other).

“Massage gives couples an opportunity to take time out together and focus on each other,” says Annabelle. “Exploring touch without any pressure or expectations can deepen intimacy and encourage communication. This actually makes sex more appealing over time, since you really feel close to your partner.”

Explore kink

Massage candles can be a gentle, low-stakes introduction to temperature play and wax play, which are particularly beginner-friendly kinks. Temperature play is all about contrasting gentle warm and cool sensations, so you can slide an ice cube down your partner’s back before taking away the shock with a soothing slick of warm oil.

Some people love the thrill of the hot wax from wax play candles, which cools quickly and feels satisfying to peel off. It’s a simple way to explore something new, without jumping straight into more intense experiences.

Deciding between massage oil vs. massage candles

If you're after a little extra atmosphere, massage candles have the edge. The warm oil, flickering glow and calming scents can make a massage feel more like an experience than an afterthought. Massage oils, on the other hand, are simpler and quicker – just pour, massage and enjoy. Whichever option is more your vibe, both help you to slow down and spend some quality time together.
