Fifty Shades Darker by Coco de Mer Masquerade Basque
Just like Ana's
Reviewed: 22 June 2017 by NatandTom, a Straight Going Steady Female
If you've seen the Fifty Shades Darker film then you might recognise this basque as Ana wore a very similar one during the ball scene. It is the standout piece of all of the Fifty Shades Darker lingerie line for me. I went back and forth on it for a while but in the end, I couldn't not get this gorgeous basque, although it's a bit pricier than I'd usually go for, I thought that Coco de Mer's luxury take on it would make it worth the spend.
I think the packaging for this range is somewhat disappointing. I'm not asking for layers of extravagance here, but something nicer than a plain plastic packet would have been appreciated. It's not a cheap piece of lingerie, so it deserved to be presented better. If you're planning on purchasing this for a partner, be sure to buy a gift bag to place it in beforehand.
I had never had the pleasure of trying lingerie designed by Coco de Mer before but as they are known for luxury, I expected this piece to be immaculate in terms of quality and it truly was. I couldn't find any flaws with it whatsoever and it appeared to be made beautifully. It's made up of two main materials, satin and mesh. Both feel great and I was particularly impressed with how soft and comfortable they were.
For the price, I thought that this basque would come with matching underwear. It doesn't. You need to purchase the thong or high-waisted briefs separately. When I'm spending £50 or more though, I'd expect a full set. I would have been happy enough with a plain mesh thong with a silver trim and I don't think that would have upper the price by much. As of right now, I'm just wearing it with black underwear in the closest material I can get to match it.
32B is the smallest size available in this basque and I wear a 30A so I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't be able to fill out the cups or the band wouldn't fit, but I needn't have worried. There are three hook-and-eye fastenings on the back and I wear it on the tightest one. It fits like a dream. I'd say that this entire range runs small from my experience, so it might even be fine for a 28 too. I feel that it will be skin-tight on someone who wears a 32.
As for the cups, I seemed to fill them out rather well. I don't have much of a bust, but there was no gaping or anything like that. There was a tiny bit of room leftover as expected because I needed to size up, but it wasn't noticeable to my partner. It was pretty flattering and actually seemed to give me a bit of a boost rather than a flattening affect.
One thing that really impressed me about this basque was the boning. I have several others that look great when standing or sitting still but sticks out with any sort of moment. It's not particularly flattering and creates an odd bump in the material that ruins the look of the outfit. This one doesn't give me those problems. The boning still moves as I do but it doesn't stick out or bend in the creating a bulge sort of way. It stays pretty close to the skin, which is exactly what I hoped it would do.
The final thing that's worth mentioning is the suspender straps. These are not removable but can be adjusted. When I tighten them fully I can attach them to stockings with no problems. I usually struggle with straps being too long for my five-foot frame, but the ones on this basque seem to be shorter than most. That's great for short women like myself, but it means they may not be long enough for those who are a lot taller.
- Design, quality, overall fit.
- No underwear and basic packaging.
- Bottom line
- A gorgeous basque that's great for recreating certain Fifty Shades scenes.
