Pauline Réage's celebrated erotic novel is a fantasy about a woman subjected - at the price of the great love of her life - to the gamut of male sado-masochistic urges.
Story of O is widely acknowledged to be one of the most famous erotic novels of all time.
Commencing with the simplest of situations, the story gradually opens out into a clandestine society of sinister formality and elegance where the primary bond is mutual complicity and dedication to the pleasures of sadism and masochism.

Beautifully Written... An Erotic Classic
Reviewed: 01 September 2011 by Lovehoney - Gemma, a Straight Going Steady Female
If you're looking for a light-hearted, Mills and Boon-style novel this isn't it.
However, if you're seeking something that is going to challenge you, excite you, lead you into a way of thinking that you've never thought possible, Story of O is perfect.
I was recommended Story of O at university by a friend and at first I was sceptical. Having not been a fan of any of the themes within the book before I didn't know what to expect.
Although not for the fainthearted 'O' is beautifully written, the style of writing is well-crafted, decadent and indulgent. I didn't want to put it down and it has since become one of my favourite erotic novels.
I will admit that Story of O isn't for everyone. Some of the themes seem extreme (even cruel), especially if you haven't had any experience of dominance and submission before. Take it for what it is and read with an open mind.
- It's well written with subtle undertones and an interesting storyline.
- You have to be in a specific mood to enjoy and appreciate it.
- Bottom line
- A great piece of erotica, but not for the fainthearted.
