I agree that the Aneros Peredise is a great starting point. They were a great starting point for me when starting to explore the pleasurable possibilities of anal and prostate fun. Also there are 2 in a pack. 1 for each of you - :).

There are a lot of good suggestions here already! However I would steer towards the Naughty Boy over the Rude Boy as the latter I find feels a little strange with no variation in girth.
The bootie bumper plugs have a very good reception from of the users i've seen in the forums so well worth a look!
The liqourice dip set are good, however the large plug is quite a step from the medium (which is less of a plug shape and more of a tool/dildo).

Agreed the large is a step up indeed. However my OH started training about two months ago and finally managed to get there today. It remains one of my fave buys from LH

totally off topic but can you trim anal beads... the ones we have are just too long and well the top two balls are small!
Yes indeed, you can trim beads! They are cheap enough to buy a few sets and experiment. I used a sharp knife to cut off a few inches on some of my sets, they're great when you fancy something really chunky. You just need a nail file to make sure the tip is smoothed off. The other advantage is you get all the thrills without needing to go so deep, so it's much less likely to get messy.
A slight word of caution, you should always be careful when using a sharp implement, so don't try this when you get in from the pub, get a sober grown up to help you!

Looks good. I'm looking for a new one so, might give it a try. I dont want anythign too long, but little bit wider would be nice! Have you ever used a strapon with your OH?

I'd recommend one of these for a first time anal toy:
Fun Factory Bootie - http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=13310
This one feels fantastic. The silicone is soft & pliable and it's a great shape that will stay in. It also has the most comfortable base I've ever used. It's great for slipping in then leaving in during play.
Lelo Bob - http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=15408
This one isn't quite as good as a regular plug as the base is a little small but it's fantastic during playt. The ring on the handle is perfect for a partner to hold on to and move around.
Both of those are also small enough for a complete beginner to use. Whatever you choose, have fun!

As a newbie I was wondering about toys that don't have a base going "beyond the point of no return" especially if some lube loosens your grip. i'm sure this worries all newbies. Alot of the suggestions I would be worried about "losing".
