So I've always been intrigued by the idea, I posted a SFW-ish gif on GW (gonewild subreddit) and was messaged about working as a cam girl.

I know its all based on tips, but the thing I'm INCREDIBLY wary about is future employers finding out/people I know finding out.

Wondered if anyone had any advice/experience on this.

    Thanks :)

    Lucy

Yes - my advice is don't do it!

Someone will always find out. You never know how your career path may change in the future. When your young it's so easy to do stupid stuff. The older members will all agree.

Nowadays, once stuff is online, it'll haunt you forever. It'll cause issues with relationships, career paths etc.

Sounds like easy money but it's not worth the backlash.

Please take my advice on this.

Not to scare you, but have you thought about the fact that the same could happen with your avatar?

I totally agree with you on the above point. If you're comfortable with the idea, perhaps you could wear a mask when you're camming. Some people will be less willing to tip, but a significant amount will tip regardless.

I've just thought: are you talking about professionally, or just as a hobby? I suppose the above won't apply if it is the former.

A friend suggested a mask, which is a good idea. Just as a hobby, extra income and all that jazz. I hate being a poor student and I don't have the time to have a proper job while I'm at uni.

I'm not really exposing anything that bad in my avatar, the actual pic is from Halloween, on the larger one I have 'fang marks' haha.

Thanks, both mrsdivine69 and TheOutsider, I'm gonna have a proper think and discuss is with my SO.

    Hi Lulu

Me again - you're a looker with a brain - please use it!

If you're a looker with an empty head - be a camgirl. (no offence to girls working in the trade)

You're gonna have a decent career one day when you graduate.

I know what's it's like to be a student and in need of cash.......... a few years ago now.

Use that brain before you do anything you'll regret. Once done it can't be undone.

I can hear your brain ticking from here.

Just going to throw it out there...I don't think you should make this decision based on what a group of people say on a forum. I think you should sit down, have a good think, weigh up the potential pros and cons and come to your own decision based on that.

Also going to throw it out there that while there are potential horror stories and while it COULD come up in the future and effect things, there are also plenty of people working in the sex industry who are proud and honoured to do the work they do and would not swap it for the world. I had to think this through when I started by blog. While my work is maybe not at "exposed" I still write about my sex life, post images and review sex toys and all the while discussing my own sex life with others. What if my family saw it? What if someone found out? Truth be told, a year down the line, I am so proud of the work I do and the help I offer others that I no longer care and most of my family know what I do. However, I have no problem cutting people from my life who would abuse knowledge to hurt me. Doing what I do means I tend to run in similar circles with cam girls, escorts, swingers, kinksters and a whole host of amazing liberated people who, as far as I can see, are happy doing what they do, but I imagine these women have really, really put a lot of thought into their decisions and have accepted the risks to relationships, careers and other personal stuff, should they get found out. I also know a few people that have suffered or had something go badly wrong.

As with anything you choose to do in life, there are risks and advantages. If you are prepared to accept the risks....and really think what the worst risks could be, don't let rose tinted glasses distract you from reeeeally thinking of all possible risks and don't think there is anything you can do to be completely and utterly anonymous as nothing is failsafe. If you have thought through all of that then you can make a decision.

Mrsdivine: Some women have made amazing careers from being in the sex industry. I understand what you are saying, completely...there are risks, but it is unfair to write them all off as air-heads who cluelessly got into something they regret, as this is not always the case.

I am neither for or against your decision, it needs to come from inside Lulu. Whatever you decide good luck....and do some Googling. Find some blogs or articles and research the possibilities and the downsides, research what can go wrong and what you can do to make yourself as safe as possible should you decide to do this. Even speak to some cam girls and ask for their experienced advice. I am sure their are some extremely friendly women with experience that can pass along some wisdom. Good luck!

as Fluff says the decision has to come from within, but after a sensible sitting down and investigating/reflecting time.

I'd suggest aside from anything else look at a few sites and get a feeling of what's what, sure a mask might help - but in reality - i'm pretty sure that close friends/rels etc would recognize you, and whilst i appreciate that they aren't likely to....it only takes 1 idiot to make it more publicly known.

I had a dabble for 'recreational' purposes, so i wasn't showing my face and if it inadvertantly showed a bit i had the mask on....what i found was that the viewers were fickle, and i imagine that from the point of view of earning a worthwhile amount of money this could be an issue. By fickle i mean that one day at a certain time you could have x number of viewers, the next day same time could be 50% fewer.

i'd suggest that as well as working out what these girls really earn you need to balance that with how long it may take you to snare someone who will pay .....i think if you believe that you can switch the cam on, and allow an hour or two to do your 'thing' you will be surprised......its a guess, but i suspect that you may well end up sitting doing nothing for those 2 hrs, or earning a very small amount. I might be very wrong on that - but some cam sites seemed ( this was a year or so ago) to have the same girls sitting there for ages....

so weigh up the REAL potential against the downsides......

I wouldn't do it. I've had conversations with male friends about what there opinion is about cam girls and they all said they could never date a girl that done it. Things like that don't stay secret. I know one person who done it when she was at uni and people found out about it. It got back to her parents and they stopped talking to her.
As for your profile pic. Most of us don't show our faces because although you may not be doing anything on here that you find wrong a lot of employers find the idea of employees using a " sex site" as wrong. If you review products on here or openly discuss your sex life then on an account that had your face on it,then you are putting yourself in the line of fire. Nothing is secret anymore on the internet .

Hi - I did put in my message - no offence to girls working in the trade -

Sorry if it's not clear. I certainly meant no offence to anyone working in the sex industry. Let's face it - if I was some sort of prude or bigot, I'd not be shopping at LH or be involved in the LH community.

I simply wanted to make the point that LULU is an intelligent women with options. Some people simply slip into the sex industry because there's nothing else open to them. The sex industy varies from sleazy to slick top-end. I am aware that there are a lot of intelligent people who make it a career choice and use their brains to get the best out of it. ie setting up their own business etc where they won't be manipulated and crushed underfoot while others cream off the cash and the victim lies bleeding in the gutter.

Hope that's clarified what I was getting at. That said, I think we are all in agreement - Lulu needs to have a good think before commiting herself. She is obviously wary of future repercussions.

Apologies if I have offended anyone.

My opinion is don't do it.

I was a student once and there are plenty of other ways to make money.

Sexy pics on the internet last forever and you don't know where your life will take you. If you become famous, a notable public figure, politician or a leader of industry, the pictures will come back to haunt you.

Just avoid it - with the internet being as it is, you just do not know where images/videos of yourself may end up.

There are plenty of people out there whose hobby consists of grabbing amateur pics off of sites and linking them up to facebook profiles, or what-have-you. Once you put an explicit image of yourself on the internet, it can never be completely erased, and is entirely possible that it may pop up and haunt you at some point in the future.

Frankly, and I don't mean to be insulting here, but rather honest; if you're taking your initiative with this idea as getting a pm on /r/gw, then that betrays an incredible amount of naivety with how cam-sites, and indeed the internet, works as a whole. I would definitely advise staying away from this idea, as you will certainly regret it at some point.

Again, I don't mean to offend here. I am just offering my opinion - I was once a teenage guy who spent plenty of his free time on sites such as reddit/4chan, so I've seen plenty of this before. I would even advise to just stay away from gonewild or any other subreddit like that - I'm constantly amazed at the amount of women who post completely compromising pictures of themselves, if only to receive some complimentary pms from teenage guys.

tl;dr: stay away from this idea :)

You could be an anonymous camgirl, there are some top-ranking camgirls on MyFreeCams who wear full head masks. As mentioned you could also wear a mask, a wig, different clothes - contouring and makeup can make people almost unrecognisable if done right.

Some sites like MyGirlFund offer an option to "block out" entire countries so that your profile isn't visible to them.

However, there will always still be a risk that people may find out. If it would be depremental to your work and social life it may not be worth it for a few years/a decade of larger income.

    Hey Lucy :)

I personaly recommend you go for it.

I am a cam girl and still manage to hold down a job, I don't get recognised by anyone and its great fun and a very interesting experience.

I wear a wig and colour my eyebrows to stay hidden from people that know me, I also say I live in a different town if asked. Wearing glasses or taking them off and usind contacts can help too.

atm, my camming is paying for my wedding next year. I know students are always strapped for cash! If you are good on the phone then try phone chat too. Just in case you do feel it isnt worth the money- i made £150 in two hours yesterday. I don't know many jobs where that sort of money can be earned!

As for future relationships, be open with them. Tell them what you do or have done and they won't feel like you have a secret, they might even enjoy it.

And for the people calling cam girls empty headed- you have to have a great cam and telephone manner, get experience in marketing and using social media to build fanbases, do your own taxes, work long hours. it's just like a retail job, the only difference is that the product is YOU. It is a lot of work and is incredibly character building. Unless you have done it yourself as a career, you simply cannot judge. The less intelligent of girls get taken advantage of and quickly move on to something else. It takes a lot of work and a lot of guts to be in the camming industry and thankfully that pays off.

mething very sexy about a idea of a cam girl!

for me i would find it hard to date a cam girl, i cant really expalin why but it think i would worry about people recognising my OH and the probs it would bring in terms of work/family

I bet its a great way to make money but there is a risk. its something you will need to decide for yourself, its a persoanl choice but my vote would be for 'no'

I think the biggest thing is making the decision yourself and knowing exactly what you want.

if you have looked at all the possible consequences, judgements etc but still feel it's right for you then go for it. If it's just an idea to get a bit of 'easy' spare cash then think hard.

I am comfortable doing glamour modelling but I don't feel the 'cam' work is for me. I know lots of other model friends who do it to provide a reliable income around shoots though.

I think you'll often build up regular viewers, but I'm guessing if it is anything like modelling you will need to put work into promoting yourself etc.

If if you run on the basis that you were found out by a family member, are you confident in being able to back up your decision.
