    I'm doing a bit of research into what would be some great products for those who have never so much as heard of a cock ring, have never broken the spine of an erotic novel and think 'crotchless' is just a typo.

    Cast your minds back, way back... through the mists of time. Back to when vanilla to you meant just a lovely flavour for icecream.

    Are you there yet? (It may be a struggle, I know!)

    What would you recommend for those very, very uninitiated? I'm thinking along the lines of some sexy stockings, massage oil, kama sutra playing cards, maybe a soft blindfold or a Rub my Duckie...

    What would be your top picks to improve someone's sex life without sticking a rocket up them with a big old rabbit or anal lube? Someone who may be a bit anxious, but definitely wants to try something.

    I remember back in the day, starting with masage oils. This was a great way to help the OH to relax and unwind. The oils can be scented and candles are used to create a mood.

    Sexy card games and sweets were next which seemed quite naughty at the time as well as fluffy cuffs.

    oh how young and naive we once were!

    Hi Alice, i would reccomend monogamy it's fun and there is nothing too kinky about it, massage oils are always a winner. It''s hard because even things like bondage tape might freak some people out!

    Yeah way back then, I think it was massage oils first, just exploring bodies and seeing what happened ;-)

    My first toy was a rabbit but can see that may not suit everyone, altho the slim rabbit could be a good option, not too intimidating or scary, and gives a variety of sensations to help you get to know what works for you, whether internally or clit etc....

    As littlepixi says perhaps a bullet too, altho maybe one with varying speeds to help overcome those initial apprehensions as to what might happen, so they can start off slowly and build....

    Maybe something like a Rub my duckie would be good too, as it's not an 'obvious' toy and you can relax and explore your body with it, without feeling too 'out there' if that makes sense, altho I don't have one of these, I imagine that's how it works.... haha!

    I think the bang bang bullet http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14964 is a good starter product. You can use it alone or together and its cheap, powerful and non-offensive. Our first one died after having it for about 2 years and are onto our second one. Also anything glass is good, we love glass in this house, warm or cold its amazing and clean ups a breeze.

    Fluffy handcuffs seem to sit in an oddly non threatening place. As soon as you make something look a little cute with a few inches of fluff I guess it has such a "fun" angle to it, the solid steel underneath doesn't have the same worrying angle to it. It was a bit of a watershed moment actually when we removed the pink furriness from a pair we'd had for a fair few years.

    Yes funny that! We had some for years!

    I think a small vibrator such as the TC/Bang Bang/Crystal High Intensity bullet would be appropriate. They can tease and tantilise any areas that that the couple would feel comfortable with. The Lover's Choice Massage Kit or at least some massage oil is a must. For those willing to spend a little more, the philips massagers would be excellent or the TC massager as a cheaper alternative. I think the key is usually to focus on items that can be used as sex toys but can also be used in an innocent manner. That way no-one is intimidated and things can develop in their own time. Buying something like a rabbit or dildo can cause too much expectation and lead to uncomortable feeling or unecessary worries.

    I think a big thing is price. What most of us here consider mid-range inspires a lot jaw dropping from the uninitiated.

    I think this is cute, non-threatening and a great price: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=17613

    This lingerie set is something different from the crotchless and neon styles: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=19430

    But hands down, the Basic range is a great introduction, if it's toys that people are after. I think the vibrating finger bullet is the star of the range but a bumper pack would offer more products for a newbie to find out what suits them best and take it from there http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=18948

    There's also Durex. Everyone knows Durex! We all know and trust the brand and some newbies will think of it as more 'respectable' than a company that is new to them. http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=18947

    I think these are a nice intro to bondage. They're not priced at Lelo prices and they're very discreet.

    I think stylish packaging is really important to new buyers as well. The plastic fantastic styles of yesteryear didn't help the perception of sex toys as dirty, deviant and cheap.

    Errr...

    Durex 2in1 massage lube,

    A lady lust finger,

    Some lingerie that can also be worn out like corsets or stockings... errr....

    Perhaps a bullet.

    Hmm, beginners stuff:

    Sexy undies (just nice matching sets, nothing crotchless);

    stockings;

    furry handcuffs;

    long-haul flight style blindfold;

    some lube;

    Love-egg type vibrator.

    I don't have to think back very far, as we've not really progressed from this anyway!

    Bottle Rocket! Dinky, non threatening, well made, insertable but almost bullet sized, powerful, waterproof, smooth and gorgeous....what more could you want from a first vibe?

    http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=6016

    2 in 1 massage and lube - sweet tasting and multifunctional and condom compatable.

    http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14876

    Basics Mega Ring - thicker band so not too constricting, good vibration, cheap and disposable

    Adx

    It's really difficult for me to think back that far, as I feel like although I was vanilla, I was secretly a deviant inside and if you'd suddenly presented me with a rabbit for instance, I'd be over the moon. Long before I tried sex toys or did anything sexual, I think I always wanted to, even if I hadn't quite put it into words. Trying sex toys for the first time was more like fulfilling an ambition than trying something new for me.

    I do think Tigerlilies is right with what she says about packaging. It's almost more important than the toy itself to vanilla people. Many people (completely wrongly!) see sex toys as dirty and deviant, and we dont need the packaging giving extra weight to that argument. I really do wish we lived in a world where people would accept that sex and its relations are all done by perfectly normal people.

    Thank you all for your input - really helpful! It's difficult to go back to that very inexperienced mindset.

    What it was like to be innocent once... Remember when a cucumber really was just a cucumber...
