I'm surprised no one has mentioned Coldplay or some other glum bastards... Well I'm not actually, probably all dead.

    Thats just cruel..

But you fail to challenge the truth value of said statement. I rest my case.

for me it, guns n roses, november rain

"nothin' lasts forever, and we both know herats can can change, and it's hard to hold the candle, in the cold november rain, we've been through this such a long long time just trying to kill the pain, but lovers always come and lovers always go and no one really knows whos letting go today, walking away, if we could take the time to lay it on the line i could rest my head just knowing that you were mine, all mine, so if you wanna love me, them darlin dont refrain, or il just end up walking, in the cold november rain"

i was with my ex from the age of 15, we broke up last year, we used to listen to this all the time when we 1st got together, only when we broke up did the words take meaning, although him doing wrong made me leave him but it just made me realise we were forcing ourselves to love eachother when realy we had outgrown eachother, i still love him to bits but unfortunatly not the way you should love a lover, he's a fab friend, and a fantastic father to my boy but thats it, i still have a sniffle when i hear our song xxx

Iv never really thought off my-self as having a break up song, but having read through this thread I have realsied there are a few songs that will forever remind me of some relationships and the various reasons they failed.. songs that will always have a emotional link to a certain person/time period of my life because I listened to them during or turned to them just after a relationship without realising it.

Most of my first relationships could be summed up by Alkaline Trio's Stupid Kid,, for obvious reasons really, I think we all go through a stage like this!!!!

whilst my first 'love' will always be associated with dashboard confessionals remember to breath. I listened to this song lots after we broke up because I still idolised her, I felt like a nervous wreck when I saw/spoke/was even in the same room as her whilst we were dating. She always seemed so relaxed and in control of every aspect of her life and I felt I had lost out on perfection due to my 'inexperience', Its only now looking back that I realise the fault did not lie at my feet alone.

But Oh well, lessons learnt I guess, and hearing these songs now just makes me smile to think im now an emotionally mature adult!!!

I think Alanis Morisette "You Oughta Know" is an amazing break up song!

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
    An older version of me
    Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
    Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
    But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
    You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?

'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, til you died
    But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
    You, you, you oughta know

'cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
    And I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...well can you feel it

Well, I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
    You, you, you oughta know
