For training I suggest going with Butt Plugs 1st off, if you look in the butt plug section in sex toys, you will see numerous sets of different sized plugs for beginners for training, and also you'll need plenty of Lube which Lovehoney has plenty of good quality ones,especially for anal. And take things slowly at First.

i have a plug already but the beginner plugs are usually too small for me, ive done anal a few times now so i just wanted something that would help speed up prep time for intercourse as my oh is quite girthy and sometimes i even struggle with two fingers let alone getting him in.

with a dildo its pretty obvious how you'd use it, but what do i do with the plug? do i just leave it in for a long time or...??

There are two things you are trying to do - firstly, to gain a greater degree of voluntary control so you can relax the anus to allow things in more-or-less at will and secondly to overcome the normal reflex that a full rectum needs to be emptied. While the first can be learned by repeatedly inserting a plug or a dildo the second is probably best learned by inserting a butt-plug and keeping it in for steadily increasing periods. Since small plugs don't tend to stay put reliably a graded set is great so you can work up to one that is big enough to be secure enough you can move around normally without is making a break for freedom. Initially I found I could not keep a plug in for more than a few minutes but this gradually improved until I could keep one in all day if I wanted to. Gradually the irritation of the 'I need to go' gets replaced by a degree of enjoyment at being full. Simply moving about with a plug in gives a degree of stimulation.

Of course practice with a dildo then helps you cope with the fact that the dildo, unlike the plug holds the anus open for the duration and that again needs to be accepted by your body before you can concentrate on the pleasure that comes from anal sex.

Would you recommend training with both to start then or one and then the other?

I used the plugs most and didn't do much with a dildo. The latter was perhaps a mistake as the first time my wife pegged me it felt like she had substituted the dildo by a small submarine. I think I underestimated how much more of a challenge the dildo represented by holding the anus wide open. Popping a plug in or out requires relaxation for a few seconds - taking a dildo requires it for much longer. If I have not been pegged for a while I will put a dildo in for a few minutes to reacquaint myself to the feeling.

I think using the plugs to get used to the fullness is the first step though.

I use a dildo on the wife, it take a bit more preparation and effort but looks better when she straddles and rides it!

Fantastic advice! I found I started out with simply enjoying the sensation of having my anus rubbed and stimulated (nice to rub a vibrator over it to get it feeling good and wanting more) from there it was the classic stimulating with one finger inside, then little skinny beginner plugs and dildos that are finger-sized, then warming up with a nice slightly larger toy until I found a butt plug size I like (I've taken note of the exact circumference of my favourite for future purchases). I find I need a t-shaped base and a skinnyish neck in order to keep a plug inside for any length of time.

To be honest, I think that plugs are a big part of the warming up process for anal sex. As well as the training they offer your rectum that Gyrator53 explained so well, I feel they also put your mind into the right place for it. When you are walking around with a plug in your bum for a few hours beforehand, you can feel the stimulation and focus on the pleasure in it. Then you may find you actively want anal sex.

Could you recommennd any plugs i could use that would stay in? I only have a smallish beginers plug and it slips out so easily. I'd love to be able to wear a plugg all day before coming back to my partner

Also, this goes to everyone, is the type of lube used important? I have been using lovehoneys flavoured lube that i bought for use with some other toys i purchased. I have been looking at lubes on lovehoney and found a wide range of choices including lube specifically for anal, but some are so expensive. Is it really worth investing 17 pounds on lube or am i alright to stick to cheaper options?

I've been eyeing up this range of plugs myself. The jiggly ball sounds fun and the necks are nice and slim in comparison, so the plug should stay in well, and the flared base looks safe. I've been looking at the medium for everyday wear because it's quite petite for a medium. This is from a post i made previously about anal that didnt get as much feedback;

I've recently stareted having anal sex with my partner but i want to know the best way to loosen my ass so it doesnt hurt. We usually start with lots of lube and fingers and then he puts his penis in slowly, keeps it sill in there, and then moves back and forth slowly until I'm ready for proper sex. I love anal and want more of it but my partner is pretty thick and sometimes it just takes too long to get it ready, or it just hurts too much to try. Even when we are successful if i want to do it again after its too sore to try.

I want to be able to have anal much more regularly, a bit crude to ask but will my ass always be this tight or does it eventually get looser so its not so much hassle to get started?

I have some beads and a butt plug but theyre more for pleasure than for training, can anyone recommend any lube/ toys to help me get a bit looser down there?
