I used to have massive shyness issues as a kid - got picked on, the usual package for nerdy kids alike.

never thought i would go back to a school. never thought id go stand up in fron of people and talk.

I did a PGCE, confronted some demons now not only do i teach (and well, I'm told) but i lecture physics to adults at degree level too - and enjoy it.

It took a lot of effort to gain that kind of confidence, and a great deal of bullshitting but if you talk loud enough, people listen. once you see ppl listening you suddenly have that 'jeez, i can actually do this' moment and it grows from there.

I went from being the quiet nerdy kid at school to the guy the wedding organiser came to at my best mates wedding to shut the drunken guests up long enough to announce the arrival of the food!

my lack of confidence shows in other areas still, ( dont do confrontation, im just shit at it) but im sure a wise man once said

that you use more, grows most. if he didnt he damn well should have done.

    Life is good.

well actually it has enough bad bits to allow full appreciation of the good which is more important.

if life was all flaT (no matter how good the flat), it would be like lincolnshire. and who wants to be like lincolnshire?

    (sorry to anyone from lincolnshire)

    K

wow you have a nerd thread. is there anything you guys dont talk about?

Hey, I've actually been in the red light district of Bolton! Me and my partner had some lovely joint lap dances there. :)

I was thinking more of a kind of protest thingy:

    • "What do we want?"
    • "Skanky HOS!"
    • "When do we want them?"
    • "NOW!"

    Would that do you? :p

Oh, sorry, my mistake. I've only been in Bolton the once, and am unlikely to be again for the foreseeable future, but if I am I will so look you up for a nice wholesome chat about doughnuts and puppies. :)

What about this kind of protest:

    • "Up the skanky hos!"
    • "Up the skanky hos!"
    • "Skanky hos rock!"
    • "Skanky hos rock!"

    That better? :)

At the risk of misrepresenting poppy904, seeing scabby hos is great in the same way seeing the cripps, the homos, and the yids is great. ;)

I mean, you must have been poorly treated by men before yet you don't mention any shyness to do with them, do you have any?

I'm not shy around men but then I've only ever been attracted to one. I thought I was gay for years until I met and fell for my friend when I was 18 and the object of my affection happened to be male (it was a huge surprise to me I can tell you!) We've been together ever since (nearly 7 years) and luckily for me he's very encouraging of my tendancies towards the fairer sex! HOWEVER...while this explains why I'm not shy of men it doesn't exactly explain why I do get shy around women :s

So what is it exactly that you are afraid will happen if you approach a woman in particular?

For some reason, I've always had bucketloads of confidence, so I can totally promise you that confidence is real and can be had by anybody, I promise. :)

I was only joking really when I said I didn't actually believe in confidence ... your confidence for example my lovely is absolutely inspirational!!! If you have a spare bucketload feel free to send it my way!!!

    Stay naughty :)

So have a think about it and work on that. I think that question is an excellent place to start if you want to work out your shyness around women. :)

Actually, you're welcome to all I've got, take it all! One of the magic things I've found about confidence is that it's like music or love or karma, the more you give away, the more you end up with. :)

So take it all, and use it in good health. :D

ps: That gives me a thought, if you tried to give confidence to others, would that help you have more? I don't know, just a thought. :)

Just for a moment there I read that as 'Me and my partner had some lovely joint tap dances there.' Surreal.

Then I realised I'd misread it! Ah yes, lap dances makes more sense.

Then again, nothing would surprise me on this forum. In a good way :0)

Aww there's too much self criticism going on here by far! What have I started!? Lol! But seriously, I think it's crazy how easy we all find it to be nice to each other (mainly because you're all awesome!) but we struggle to find kind words to say about ourselves and are surprised when others are nice to us.

I know I'm pretty bad at taking compliments, I find criticism much easier to believe! Recently though I've taken to saying "thank you" instead of being weird about it and one day (hopefully) I'll start believing the good stuff too!

I mean, yeah, you all suck, so what? Nobody dies if we suck. So we can suck and still be fabulous!
