Skincare Hands

Your skin absorbs over 60% of what you put on it. So if you're careful about what you eat, why shouldn't you be careful about what you put on your skin?

Lubrication is really important for safe, comfortable sex and masturbation. It eases penetration, making vaginal and anal sex more comfortable for men and women - and for circumcised men, a personal lubricant is often necessary to help prevent friction.

The vagina lubricates itself when you're aroused, but sometimes it doesn't happen. Stress, tiredness, diet and menopause can all have an impact on your body's natural lubrication - which is where a bottled lube comes in handy.

Even if things are pretty well lubricated down there, over 70% of women find sexual experiences even more satisfying with lube, so why not give it a go?

All of our lubricants are body safe, but they may not all be suitable for people with allergies or special requirements. We often get asked about all-natural alternatives to traditional lubes, so we've put this guide together to, well, guide you through the bewildering world of natural lubes.

Coconut oil as a natural lubricant

Coconut oil has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years and people now use it for everything, from moisturising skin to smoothing flyaway hair. But can you use it as a lube?

Can you use coconut oil as a sex lubricant?

Pros

Coconut oil is a great personal lubricant. It doesn’t stain, has natural anti fungal properties (great for women who are prone to yeast infections), is longer-lasting than water-based lube - and is completely chemical-free.

Just make sure you just get pure coconut oil, with no chemicals added to so you know exactly what you’re putting on your body.

It’s also a lovely skin moisturiser and is better for the skin that baby oil (which, by the way, you should never use ‘down there’) - so try using it as a gorgeous smelling massage oil as a prelude to sex. The smell is a natural aphrodisiac to boot…

Cons

You cannot, we repeat cannot use coconut oil with latex condoms. It degrades the latex, leading to broken condoms and - you know the rest. Instead, use a polyurethane condom, which won’t break down in the presence of the oil.

Because it’s not water soluble, coconut oil is also trickier to clean off than water-based lubes, making it more likely to harbour harmful bacteria than silicone or water-based lubes. Those who are prone to acne should also avoid using it as a massage oil, as it is likely to increase skin problems.

Can you use coconut oil with sex toys?

Coconut oil is safe to use with glass, metal, ceramic and high quality silicone sex toys. It is not compatible with other plastics, such as jelly, rubber, TPR, TPE, latex, vinyl and PVC. These are all porous, and the use of oil could cause the material to degrade. Be sure to check the product description if you’re unsure - all of our products have this information, so you can make the best choice.

Top tip:

It’s a solid at anything below 24 °, so if it’s hard, spoon a little from the jar and hold it in your palms until it melts before smoothing over skin. Do make sure you test a little on your arm before diving straight into using it as a lube - and of course, don’t use this if you have a nut allergy.

Olive oil as a natural lubricant

You probably already have some of this in your kitchen. You can use it for cooking and moisturising your skin - but how does it compare to traditional lubricants?

Can you use olive oil as a sex lubricant?

Pros

Readily available, it lasts ages and it's good for your skin. It also has a neutral PH, so it is fine for women who are trying to conceive, and should keep yeast infections at bay.

Cons

It's a dense oil, and very tricky to clean off. It doesn't have the best smell (stir fry, anyone?) and it can stain. Plus, it doesn't smell great when it goes off. As with all oils, it's not compatible with certain sex toys, and certainly not compatible with latex condoms.

Can you use olive oil with sex toys?

As with coconut oil, olive oil is safe to use with glass, metal, ceramic and high quality silicone sex toys. It is not compatible with other plastics, such as jelly, rubber, TPR, TPE, latex, vinyl and PVC. Be sure to check the product description if you're unsure - all of our products have this information, so you can make the best choice.

Top tip

Check that your olive oil doesn't contain any preservatives. These are not designed for intimate use and could irritate your skin. It's also worth investing in extra virgin olive oil as opposed to any other type. Pour a small amount into your palm to warm it, then smooth it onto yourself or your lover.

Can you use almond oil as a sex lubricant?

Hemp oil and almond oil are good lubricant substitutes, and the latter smells especially heavenly, making it a great choice for massage. Both have the same pros and cons as coconut oil, but are more expensive and slightly harder to source.

As with coconut oil, be sure not to use these oils with certain sex toys and latex condoms, and remember to check allergy advice before using nut oils.

Natural oils to avoid:

Canola oil, corn oil, vegetable oil, sunflower oil and avocado oil can create a sticky, unpleasant buildup, so avoid using these as intimate lubricants - keep them to salads and the frying pan.
