1. Julie Peasgood's Greatest Sex Tips in the World

Julie Peasgood's Greatest Sex Tips in the WorldFrom This Morning to starring in Brookside, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, Julie Peasgood's done it all - and her book, The Greatest Sex Tips in the World, takes her in some exciting new directions!

How did you come to write the book?

I was co-presenting a gardening programme with media gardener and publisher, Steve Brookes. He had launched 'The Greatest in the World' series with a book of tips about gardening, and this had quickly expanded into a wide range of titles by different authors on a number of subjects: Yoga, Golf, Travel, Property Developing, etc.

I asked who had written the Greatest Sex Tips (as I reckoned that would be his best seller) and he asked me if I was interested. I've always had a theoretical, as well as practical, interest in the subject (!) and I'd written for various magazines and had a column in the Express, so I wasn't a stranger to writing. I loved doing it, and the icing on the cake was then winning the Scarlet Award for 'Best Sex Writer.'

    What's your favourite tip?

I think maybe one of the funny ones, like 'Get a Grip' (on page 26) about the power of the PC muscle. It tells a true story, and the Natural Contours Energie Kegel Exerciser - stocked by Lovehoney! - really does the trick (although the tricks described in the story might take a bit more practice!)

    What's your favourite toy?

I really like Fun Factory vibrators, particularly Little Paul - small but significant. Their products are well-designed, user-friendly and safe, because they don't contain phthalates, a potentially dangerous ingredient contained in some plastic sex toys.

Did you do all the research yourself?

Yes, I read over thirty sex manuals, studied numerous information websites, interviewed everyone I could and of course, enjoyed road-testing as many toys as possible - with the willing help of my husband, Patrick!

What's your most embarrassing sex related story?

In the course of my research, I encountered an amazing person called Angela, who had just had a sex change. Within two minutes of meeting, she pulled her knickers down to show off her newly created vagina - not an opening gambit I'm used to socially…

What's the most outrageous thing you've ever done (or that you're happy to confess to?)

Well, obviously I'm not going to confess here to the most outrageous, but I will own up to joining the Mile High Club and being found out - I had to pretend Patrick had been very airsick, requiring my assistance in the loo! Not entirely sure that we convinced. (Hence my tip 'Be Prepared' on page 66)

Why are websites like Lovehoney a good idea?

I think a lot of people may still find it a bit embarrassing shopping in a sex store - although I'm pleased to say that they're far more widespread and welcoming than they used to be. Shopping online has masses of advantages - websites can offer a wide stock, valuable customer feedback, promotions and in the case of Lovehoney, orders are despatched with phenomenal speed in discreet packaging.

What would you say to someone who is nervous about using sex toys for the first time?

Do some research and start with a toy that is small and non-threatening. Some vibrators on the market look like something out of a sci-fi movie - why put yourself through that? This is meant to be for your enjoyment, after all. And while you're at it, choose the right lubricant - it's genuinely worth investing in a good one - ID Lubes, for instance, have a great selection - and use plenty of it.

    Any other comments?

I really hope people enjoy The Greatest Sex Tips in the World. I've put together what I consider to be some of the most helpful and relevant advice - with my own particular 'take' and sense of humour. And if it can inform and improve such an important aspect of our lives, then I'll be extremely happy.
