I'm amazed that so many people know so little about their own anatomy.

The hood is like an inverted V where the labial lips meet above the clitoris. It normally serves to protect that sensitive organ from being permanently stimulated by contact with clothes, etc.

Piercing across the hood and inserting a ring is the most popular female genital modification because the ball which closes the ring hangs down onto the clit if it's placed correctly and it not only looks good, it allows more direct stimulation of the clit during foreplay and sex.

The same area is often pierced vertically and a barbell style ornament used to give a similar stimulating effect - it all depends on what fits best on your body.

It's often said that genital jewellery also acts like a signpost to show your partner where to focus their attentions...

The actual clitoris is usually too small to be pierced and even the smallest ring or bar tends to pull the clitoris forwards all the time, so the sensations would be too intrusive for long-term wear. Genital piercings are not just for the ladies - I have the male equivalent of a hood piercing - it's often called a Prince Albert, though there's no proof that Queen Victoria's husband had one. Gentlemen did have their penises pierced in Victorian times and long before - a small ring through the tip served to keep the foreskin back, helping hygiene. It was also used to secure the penis to the leg to preserve the fashionable line of the tight trousers they wore, but there's no doubt that it also enhances the pleasure of both partners during sex.
