Safe sex toys - sorting fact from fiction

The Green Blog has just posted an article called Safe Sex Toys Revisited which aimed to updated its readers with information about sex toys and health (following up scares about sex toys and phthalates).

Despite the blog's best intentions, it wasn't entirely accurate or helpful, and still trotted out the totally unsubstantiated line that "sex toys could be cancerous".

You are definitely right to care about what your sex toys are made of just as you should care about what's in your food.

But there is a lot of misinformation and scaremongering on this topic and even Violet Blue's comments reported in the Green Blog aren't entirely accurate.

For example, you can't lump CyberSkin in with jelly materials - CyberSkin is a totally different material all together.

As the manufacturer says: CyberSkin is made with ingredients from FDA approved lists. CyberSkin contains no PVC, no phthalates, no latex and no heavy metals.

The adult industry has made great progress recently improving the materials its products are made from. Jelly is still used, but it's increasingly being outweighed by TPR and TPE materials, which the LoveHoney Jessica Rabbit 2.0 is made from. Looks like Jelly, but most certainly isn't.

And this is before you even begin to consider the scaremongering from the likes of Greenpeace, among others.

Their studies have largely been discredited, so to say "sex toys could be cancerous" is over-stating the situation by some margin.

Nevertheless, Violet Blue's advice holds true. If in doubt, use a silicone, TPR, TPE, glass or metal toy. Or use a condom over your jelly one.
