Fifty Shades of Grey Red Room Collection Paddle
Bit of a soft touch
Reviewed: 16 February 2015 by sleepycelia
I've roadtested quite a few items from the FSOG line now, and regardless of my opinions on the books, I've not been particularly impressed with them. I was hoping this would be the one to prove me wrong with the copy boasting about the high-quality materials, the significant price tag, there was even mainstream press coverage - but alas. It is not.
The Red Room paddle comes in a cream canvas bag which I actually quite like, I definitely prefer it to the slightly flimsy satin bags I've received with the other FSOG items I've received, but it does have a nasty habit of attracting dust bunnies and needs a good brush down every so often. Unfortunately, this is about the only thing I do genuinely like.
The copy states that this is 'professional standard', but I'd argue that a professional wielding this like it's the be-all and end-all of paddles doesn't really know what they're doing. The stitching's irregular, the suede loop at the end is starting to shed, and the materials themselves aren't anything special - they're incredibly average and the smooth leather has a strange plastic-y finish that's totally unlike any other leather goods I own. I think fans of the FSOG line are going to think I'm being too hard on this, but what would I get out of that? I find reviews that tear into something for the sake of it painfully boring, but this is just ridiculous. Come on now.
Performance-wise it's more of the same. You do get some variation with the sensations - the leather side's capable of giving out a decent sting with a pleasant cracking sound, and the suede side would be brilliant for people just starting to experiment with impact play, soothing when stroked over sore spots and delivering a gentle thuddy slap, but again, it's not that impressive. At least the handle doesn't dig into my palm?
For the price I'd want more weight, an extra layer or two; it's a slim paddle and doesn't seem capable of doling out more than an apples-in-their-cheeks redness. I suppose it depends what you personally require from a paddle, but for the price I'd expect something with a bit of heft, not... this, it's your bog-standard one layer paddle dressed up in a suede coat. I'm not particularly impressed with it by itself and even less impressed when I take the price into consideration.
There's not much else to say about this. I wasn't impressed and if you're lusting over it because of the 'luxury' marketing and the fact that it comes in brown leather instead of black, please don't waste your money - you'd get more sting from the back of a sturdy hairbrush, I promise you. It's profoundly mediocre. I wish I could recommend it because I've not had fantastic experiences with the FSOG line so far and I really wanted to be proven wrong, but this isn't something I can recommend when there's so many similar products out there that'll do it better and for less.
- It's brown and not black, the suede side is thuddy, canvas bag.
- Not remotely luxe, grossly overpriced, average sensations.
- Bottom line
- If only the impact was as aggressive as the marketing.
