Reviewer: englishrose, a Single Bi-Curious Female
City Maid is set primarily in Victorian London, and revolves around the exploits of an innocent country girl, Eleanor, who has left her country parish for a new life in the big city.
Although she has been well-schooled on the dangers of lust and lasciviousness by the parson at home, it doesn't take long before she falls prey to a man on her coach. From this, her first sexual encounter, things go into freefall, as she arrives at her new home, begins an affair with the tweenie, falls foul of the French lady's maid and ultimately comes under the spell of her mistress, Mrs Hampton.
There's something for nearly everyone in here, though the emphasis of most of the encounters is on discipline and mild domination. The action is primarily girl on girl, and this is the best writing in the book. The male-female encounters tend to be rather rushed in their description, giving the impression that the author is not as interested in the erotic possibilities of these for the reader. There are a couple of FFM and FFF scenes, and some delicious voyeuristic moments connected with the son of the house, one of which culminates in a MM encounter, and this same son is also subjected to a brief session of CBT in a different scene.
This is an erotic book, but I would recommend it primarily to those interested in B and D, whether FF or FM. The writing about other encounters is simply not as good, nor as erotic. The character development is OK for a book of this type - but if you prefer something with more historical flavour, rather than simply the setting, I would recommend trying something like "Tipping the Velvet" instead: a lot of the FF scenes in this book are reminiscent of that and "Fingersmith". If, however, you are just looking for a joyous romp with a Victorian background, replete with lots of discipline, this might just tick your boxes.
The cover, though, as shown, is hardly discreet - so if you don't want people to know you're reading mucky books, don't leave it on the nightstand.
Pros
A galloping pace throughout, perfect to read through or dip into.
Cons
Trying to tick multiple sexual boxes has resulted in sometimes lacklustre description.
Bottom Line
A good introduction to erotic writing, or the joys of spanking.
