Firstly, don't let the image confuse you, there is about a centimetre gap between each bead. It's also really sturdy.
Having the big and small beads makes it usable for both bead novices and pros. Personally, I say the bigger the better!!
It is good for use by yourself with a rabbit or clitoral vibrator, but for absolute enjoyment, use it with a partner, whilst you're on top, or whilst they're performing oral on you. It is the most incredible sensation, to have him pull the beads in and out whilst he licks you out.
