What's a dork then? Very American term but thought I'd throw it in the mix to confuse things a bit more :)

Ooh, you threw me so much there (considering my initial response was 'whale penis'!), it was Urban Dictionary time. :P

2. an individual who is keenly interested in and good at mathematics, science, and technology, and applies mathematical and scientific principles to everyday occurrences, while at the same time being loveable and very personable, often having many friends due to wittiness, often loves video games. Not to be confused with nerd, or geek, or dweeb.

Oh bloody hell, what's a dweeb?!

A dweeb is a small piece of ultra sour confectionary, at least they were a few years back.

Girls in glasses are very sexy, although that kind of goes with the secretary look too. If a gorgeous lady came up to me and asked to sequence my genome I'm unlikely to refuse.

Hmmm from that description sounds like it's a cross between a nerd and a geek?

Personally I thought a dweeb was a sweet (http://candyaddict.com/blog/2007/01/12/retro-candy-flashback-dweebs/)....

Big Bang theory anyone? ( The programme, not the actual theory - although it is pretty hot!).

It's the geeks who change the world, as opposed to the meek who inherit the earth...... I'll get my coat.

Abby from NCIS aka Pauly Perette is the uber ultimate of sexy!! I LOVE her! Mmmmmm... I like the younger guy from Mythbusters too.

At the end of the day I'm a bit of a geek myself. I have a wide knoledge and collection of Final Fantasy games, I have spent more than most would dare on computers. My bf is a computer tech and went to college for it, and I, who dropped out pretty much as soon as I took my GCSE's find myself fixing his computer because I know more about computer software......

I have geeky male friends, and nerdy male friends. When living in a hostel I would find myself in my neighbours room nearly every night, watching him playing Lord of the Rings on his PC and discussing Stephen King novels that were made into films, and discussing the price of vodka in sweden... The whole time I'm thinking "Should I make a move on him? Or will it scare him off?" Lol!!

ha ha! I can see that now actually! But its better I didn't cuz we are good friends now. I remeber how shocked he was when I told him I was bisexual! I could almost see the images of his fantasies flashing behind his eyes!

Want to know how geeky I am? I got up from my sick-bed to contribute to this thread, that's how bad!

(Don't worry - I'm having a ME day. My fingers are too "arthritic" to type on the iPod, otherwise I'd be using that.)

Anyway, I'm definitely a TV series and films kind of fangirl. Only the very newbiest of you will be unaware of my lust for guys from the Whedon-verse* (Lindsey McDonald from Angel is my all time fave, closely followed by Jayne Cobb from Firefly), Wolverine (and now Deadpool as well), Aragorn from LOTR and Commander Benjamin Sisko from Star Trek.

My latest fave, which no-one else seems to know of (any OA-ers who do?) is Leverage. Not only does it have my boy CK from Angel but there is a superb computer geek-boy in it - Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge), who does things like use the names of Star Trek movies to alert the others to danger - "Doctor Ratho Khan to emergency". (I'm so geeky, it's probably only me that finds that funny).

I too have had penchants for cartoon characters but for me it was Jason from Battle of the Planets.

*Girls from the Whedon-verse are cool too - Faith, Fred Burkle, Kaylee Frye...

Dude... thats geeky! Almost as geeky as a friends brother who set up a kettle and mini fridge in his bedroom, so he wouldn't have to leave his computer for food or coffee!

I got called a geek yesterday for organising my documentries in their subject specific folder.... I argued for a while then checked this wiki description:

"a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek#cite_note-0

Bugger... I am slight geek!

I do enjoy me Sci-fi but I'm a bit of a heretic in some respects... I only thought Star Wars was alright ... Didn't stop me and some friends discuss Dragons Den lightsaber ideas (or buying mini replicas for the DS....)...

Cutlery, emergancy bus/train things, de-bra'ers, etc..

Yay for Philosophy! That's my course! Whoop!

I like this thread!!

^^De-Bra'ers! Great! Lol!!

I love random conversations that borderline on geek.

Heres a nerdy question that I still can't work out the answer to.

If you take a record on a record player while its spinning, take a point form the outer edge of it, and a point from the inside label. As it spins the point on the outer edge need to spin faster than the point on the label as it has a greater circumference distance to cover in the same time as the point on the label. Therefore the whole record needs to be spinning faster and faster the further away from the center of the record!

I've confused so many people discussing this, including friends, family, uni graduates, teachers, children with wide imaginations, etc etc.. I still have no answer on how this can be true, but it must be true!!

Oooh I could never organise documentaries, films etc by genre, 'cos then I'd get into arguments with myself over genre definitions :/ I organise documentaries either just alphabetically, by the presenter (good for Louis Theroux etc) or by the tv station (e.g. BBC). It still gets kinda messy though!

Hmmm could it be to do with mass and velocity?? The outside edge would be heavier than the inside...

I'm not even sure if I read this question right but if we're talking about LP records then the needle travels inwards, towards the centre in a spiral. It is fastest along the larger circumference, slowing down the closer it gets to the label.

It doesn't have a constant linear velocity like CD's, it changes, but it should only get faster if you're playing it in reverse and have a very funny record player!
