After a discussion with a group of my girly friends, I think it is safe to conclude that (for us, at least) geeks = hot!

Does anyone else agree?

What do you find attractive about nerd/geek types?

Is it just a girls in glasses fantasy? Do you have a thing for guys who know the Dewey Decimal System off by heart?

Who is your ultimate nerd pin-up?

I have to say that I find Kari from Mythbusters very sexy! A beautiful girl with a passion for physics... le sigh... does it get any better than that!?

The thing I find attractive about intelligent types is probably the passion involved. Whether they've got a lust for astronomy or MMORPGs, if someone can talk passionately about something they love for hours and hours - and you can see the excitement on their face - then that is incredibly attractive!

So... 'fess up! Which geeks get you hot under the collar (comic book and cartoon characters included!)?

Oh yes please. Man who knows how to make my computer work = hot. I'd agree and say that it's the knowledge and passion involved that's excting... and it's probably a control thing for me to. If a guy knows *exactly* what he's doing in any scenario, I find that really hot!

True - it is an understated fact that nerds are hot. One cannot argue with that.

But, ooh, just the mention of the Dewey Decimal System, and I'm all hot and sweaty... I need to go and cool down before I start fantasising about the Binary Numeral System.

Maybe not to quite the same degree now (with the modern acceptance of geek-chic), but that whole scruffy, not-bothered look certainly was hot. A lot cuter than the try-hard, made-up look. And who can say that clothes braces are not positively adorable?!

But comic books are the ultimate turn on. I can't count the times I've been into a comic store and, based upon the fact that the person in question is going doe-eyed over an Incredible Hulk comic, fallen in love. True, I am fickle and very, very shallow, but it is hot. I pretty much orgasm at the sight of a plastic sleeved X-men comic.

Is it taking it too far to fancy cartoon characters though?! I've had this discussion with my one geeky housemate (who's idea of an ideal boyfriend is David Attenborough crossed with Optimus Prime), and we decided that this is something we should keep to ourselves... But should my lust for Mystique really be kept from the world?!

This is the one area where I'm not so hot for them though - I don't like to feel inadequate in the computing department! Knowledge is sexy-power, true, but the programming, not so much. And I always find it embarassing if a girl claims to be more of a Buffy fan than me... That's actually ended a romance before!

No. Your lust for Mystique should never be kept from the world - it should positively be encouraged!

I'm a big Tank Girl fan (the comic book, not the movie) and get all unnecessary if I see someone reading one in a coffee shop or on the bus. In fact, I've struck up some amazing friendships from just noticing what someone is reading.

I also like nerd-on-nerd debate! There's something very sexy about getting into a discussion about something you're both into then having it get a little heated as you continue to argue your points further! Philosophy is a great one for hardcore debate action but I'm easy!

You SO can be in love with cartoon characters! When I was little I wanted to marry Disney's Robin Hood - still harbouring a crush on that foxy fox - and when I was a little older, James Bond Jr. I know they're not the nerdiest of characters, but still!!

ONe of my nerdy pin-ups is Spencer from Criminal Minds. That boy would get it. Oooh and Hodgins from Bones!

In my opinon fancing a cartoon character is fine. At the end of the day fantasies are meant to be naughty and taboo.

I dont know if you know but anime make a cartoon porn called hentai, this is specificly made for people to get thier rocks of to.

so in that respect no there is nothing wrong with a fantasy for cartoon characters

Haha, in that case, excellent. I shall reenter the world this week with a new pride :P Only it might make finding a girlfriend a little difficult, comparing anyone with her...!

Debating is one of my favourite things ever - usually without them knowing, that's how I figure out if it's going to work with someone! But because the geekverse is so fabulously wide-ranging, it's an ideal place to get a good discussion going. I've rather lost count of the number of times I've had the 'choose, now, the most influential cartoon from your childhood' debates! I'm still torn between Gargoyles (no, I am unashamed) and X-Men. And I met the cutest guy on the bus a month or two ago, him reading X-Men Forever #5. So, for now, let's say you can judge a book [reader] by his cover. :)

Bizarrely, I can understand the Robin Hood crush! He's so cool and suave. I think I wanted to be him.

Can I just say, I'm so glad someone else fancied a fox as a child (weirdest sentence ever?)! I always had a thing for Fox from Animals of Farthing Wood... Don't ask me why, I have no idea!

In slightly less strange conversation, other fanciable geeky characters:
Jean Luc Picard (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Ellen Ripley (but only in Alien 3)
Leonard (Big Bang Theory)
Faye (Cowboy Bebop)

I don't think you have to be a nerd to fancy Picard from Star Trek though :D Apparently he gets allll the girls.

From a guy's perspective, nerdy girls I find to be very, very hot! Something about the glasses and the geeky clothes just turns me on, bit of a fetish I suppose :) Who can't love an Invader Zim t-shirt, baggy jeans and a pair of cons?

yep geek girls have it! not a fan of the orange chavvy look!

atleast with geeks you now they are into something more interesting than BigBrother (which i wish would just explode and cease to exist) and becoming a beautician (oh the irony)!

I think I agree with you there Disco Dave. Except for the Picard statement... I do not understand people's total love (and creepy lust) for the man! Hmm, hot geeky characters/ people...

Dana Scully (X-Files)

Louis Theroux (and I bet it's not just the glasses. He's definitely got a nerdy side to him)

Willow (BtVS. More so in cute computer-nerd phase. Preferably with dungarees)

Padme Amidala (in Star Wars I & II. Natalie Portman. In fact, the only reason to watch them)

Iron Man (and I wouldn't have looked twice at Robert Downey Jr. before)

and, well, if it isn't clear by now (and fellow fans have license to lynch me for this), most of the cast from any of the X-Men movies. Especially Victor Creed (aka Liev Schreiber) a la Origins... I don't understand.

Oooh Louis Theroux, totally never thought of him! I have no idea how he managed to contain himself in the brothel and swinger episodes, I'd have shut the cameras off and disappeared :D

It depends what kind of geek eh? People who are nerdy and spend loads of time on computers and playing Dungens and Dragons and have very little social life ... Yeah, I've had my fair share of attraction to them.

ahh see you've hit the critical question! What makes a geek a geek and a nerd a nerd?

He doesn't look particularly nerdy, but the character of Iron Man is a weeny bit on the side of comic-geekiness :P If you fancy the actor though, I think you'd be let off the hook.

Hmm, true, true...

I normally define a nerd as someone more in the academic side of things - you were generally classified a nerd if you were particularly talented at a specific subject (e.g. the classic 'Physics Nerd').

A geek being someone with an inordinate amount of enthusiasm for an activity normally dwelling in the 'geek' category of social behavior. Prime examples being Dungeons and Dragons and MMORPGs. Alters with changing social perception of said geekiness though... equally degrees of geekdom.

Ooh, but then you get those boundary-crossing geeky nerds... Usually involving a great deal of computer-enthusing.

Hmmm... But everyone's definitions seem to differ!

What's a dork then? Very American term but thought I'd throw it in the mix to confuse things a bit more :)
