 With him flat out on his back and you astride on  your knees try tucking your feet up onto his thighs/torso depending which way you are facing.  This gives you much more control and ability to lift/move your body.

Interesting topic. I've never liked being on top - part being insecure about my body (thanks, ex-who-made-mid-sex-comments-about-my-fat-rolls!) and part my knees ache quickly and I just find it really hard to move and stay moving.
