So kids shout it out  Crayola- so what?  Like I think we need to calm down about it.  You just tell them off!  I just hate how we infantalise somethings.  Then kids don't actually learn the actual names of their own body parts!  You just tell them that it's not on to discuss these parts in public, they will learn rude words anyway so it's better to teach them to behave than to 'escape' the problem with silly names.  It means they don't get silly when they do learn a rude word.

I'm not saying infantalise them- like I said I think silly names are exactly that, silly- but do they really need to know the clinical name at a young age? when they're old enough to understand what you do and don't shout out in public then tell them, but front bum works perfectly well for a four year old in my opinion.

Hi Crayola, I'm with Imelda on this one - by telling kids that it's not OK to use the "proper" words in public, surely we perpetuate the whole shame over our bodies thing?  Not putting this terribly well (blame the pain killers), but it just strikes me that by not teaching children the proper name for body parts (and teaching them how to behave in public!), you are sowing the seeds for the vague guilt and repression that so many of us have had to overcome in later life....

No- I get your point, and they do need to be taught the real words eventually, I think its just a question of when. I don't really get the guilt idea because I never had to deal with that- I wasn't taught 'penis' and 'vagina' or anything technical about sex until they did it in school aged 10 and I'm still very open about sex.

Disagree that they have to be taught, l never was and managed to pick up the complete repertoire from what l read, heard and was told, by peeps. Use the language according to the occasion- don't we all ?

Oh it's not that you have to be taught as kids so you know it for later life.  Of course you will pick up.  My issue is that I think kids should be taught terms that are normal/used by adults (not crude though!) so they can talk about their bodies in a mature way, not infantalised.  I agree the language does change for the occassion (I wouldn;t use cock and pussy for kids TBH) but I'd say penis and vagina is the right language for the occasion of kids talking about their bodies.  Most of the time, I wouldn;t tell them off for using other terms!!

i have never had names for mine! or any blokes either -i tend to find if i am in the mood for that kind of thing just grabbing said part is enough - dont need any names!!
