I've been the rope bottom for this kind of bondage though the main type of rope bondage I engage in is less aesthetic. To say I've been getting tied up and occasionally suspended for eight years, I really don't know much about it. I should probably do something about that... I'll happily share what little I know though!

Rope does have risks. Nerve compression and reduced circulation being the most obvious. Make sure your OH is aware of the signs of compression and reduced circulation and is able and willing to communicate with you (and not too proud too). Take into consideration any health issues and learn as much as you can about how to use rope safely. The safety parts of this online course are free to access: http://shibariclasses.usefedora.com/courses/shibari_1 This book might be useful too: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=26944 Although I haven't read it, Jay Wiseman is a well respected name in the kink scene (though some edge players object to his approach to safety and risk, believing he is over cautious at times). This Two Knotty Boys book will probably have more examples of actually ties though: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=26946 though, again, I haven't read it.

I'm assuming you probably won't be doing suspension (at least for a while) so you can pretty much use any rope you want. This site explains a bit about the different types of rope and what they are suitable for: http://shibari-nation.com/freecontent/main.php?page=ropeprep

The cotton rope LH sells will probably be most comfortable but I prefer hemp (there is actually some hemp on offer at the moment http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=15780 ). As long as you aren't doing suspensions it is really just down to price and personal preference.

Another option to learn rope is to go to a peer rope class. If you look on fetlife there will almost certainly be one in your area.
