Dies anyone have there own system in sorting out music and dvd collection? Reminds me of My family where they kept changing the order of CD's and it really pissed each other off. I sort my Cds by artist, dvds tend to be genre, date, and production company.

CDs are sorted by region and country, with those from musicians who play in several groups as together as I can get them. Tricky for sprawling scenes like Scots trad where there's so much fluidity.

When I was married, I'd often come down in the morning to find my eastern European collection rearranged. A bit frustrating, but I realized that my organization required a fair bit of knowledge to understand. I like that though and use it to help me remember how the various bits relate to each other.

Was interrupted while typing and forget to check thread progress. Didn't know that music is essentially disposable for you. Are you arguing that pricing for all music should be based on your usage patterns? I'm quite happy to pay £12 for a CD. I get most of mine at gigs from the musicians themselves. No executives in suits involved anywhere in the process, so it's all going to keep the music vibrant.

its not disposable, but i do get bored very quickly. and pricing should be based on a competitive model that also takes into account economic climate of the country its being sold in. you say your ok paying £12 for a cd? what if in America that cd cost $12 to buy and 0.3c to produce, would you still feel you are getting your moneys worth?

lets move away from cds and use another popular example.

a Samsung Full HD 32" tv:

    production location: china

production cost: $30 (based on 1 parts per 1000 est)

retail price for unit in USA: $350

    retail price in UK: £350

cost of transportation into USA @ UK: same

media works on the same basis. what im trying to say is and im not sure its coming out in the way i mean it, is why should you pay more for the same product that costs the same to produce no matter where it is sold in the world? it really has nothing to do with individual economic climates and the model is obviously based on the system of matching the pricing from a base market ie for example using the USA pricing system as a base model for the rest of world. if something costs $300 in the USA it costs £300 in the uk, doesnt make much sense.

my view of digital media has nothing to do with lack or respect for artists, actors etc etc (there is no emotional reasons what so ever) its a simple calcalation of cost over substence

Economic analysis is getting far too off topic for this thread, but using a single model regardless of the scale of the enterprise doesn't work. I'm happy to pay £12 for a CD because that's an important part of how a dynamic music scene I love continues. I literally hand the money to the musicians themselves most of the time. If production costs are low, that's great because it's more money for the musicians.

A strict production cost pricing model just doesn't make sense, certainly not for small music niches. The performers do need to eat. %-)

I agree that the full price of CDs and DVD's is far too much. WHich is why I usually buy them second hand. I have a few CDs from small barely signed/unsigned bands most of them local, and I have no problem paying full price. They tend to be cheaper than those found in big shops anyway, and I know the money I pay is worth it because most of it goes back to the artist and helps them get off the ground.

I have some CDs from bands that people have never heard of, and they can be really expensive, but if I can afford it then it is worth it, in my opinion, since I wouldn't get the CD if I didn't like them. I used to be confused why the stuff I like tended to be more expensive than other CDs, until my man pointed out that it was because the artist only released so many of them to go to clubs and DJ's.

Nymphomaniac - I really like Akira. I wish I could watch more anime than I do now. I miss Cowboy Bebop!

I order CD's always in alphabeitcal order. Then you know instantly which CD has gone walk abouts if there is a gap. DVD's tend to be in Genre. OH has a lot of war films so they are dived in to Pre-world war, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, and more recent.

I watched the new Studio Ghibli film, 'The Borrower Arrietty' last night. It was as brilliant as I've come to expect from Hayao Miyazaki - there's a bit involving a crow that had me in absolute stitches. Definitely buying it!

Akira - what a film. I absolutely love it. Has anyone seen 'Paprika'?

ah, well small independent music is a totally different thing all together. i was refering to the same model thats been in use for mainstream media for the last 30years. i do pay for indie mp3s and artists that use the "pay what you want" system. half my music collection is stuff no ones ever heard of, i spends hrs trolling music sites around the world finding good music.

    no chat?  :^(

Yeah, not seen you "online" for ages, I thought you were avoiding me! ;^)

I can only suggest the old "log out then back in" and "Set your availability again" fixes, apart from that some firewalls have been known to block it.

Glad you are ok, did you ever find that alternative site you were looking for?

I watched the most appalling porn film "porn wars" at 3am, on my own with a family sized bag of M&Ms, wasn´t even inspired enough to have a naughty fumble with myself after....how f***ing sad is that :(
