Quick question to other bloggers, how did you get more hits (I mean aside from writing a better blog - I'm working on that one!) and generally mix with more people via your blog? Just wondering, y'see?

There are articles out there on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) which can show you ethical ways to increase the visibility of a website.  Do a search and you'll find what you're looking for if you want to increase your visibility on the web.  I find that being on wordpress.com gets my blog posts into google quicker than if I had a standalone website.  I don't know if this also works with blogger or other blogging platforms.  I don't construct my blog according to SEO, but I do follow conventions for naming the images I upload for google image search.  I write what I want to, and I think I get lots of hits and referrals because the stuff I write about happens to also be popular search topics.  I expect that a lot of the pageloads I get are from people who are looking for something else, and who are probably disappointed with my blog.  :p

Most of my hits come from web searches for various things.  Sometimes I get referrals from unusual search results, but most of the hits I get are for search results getting my prostate milking pages.  I also get a significant number of referrals from pages which link to me from elsewhere, either links to me from other bloggers' blogrolls, or links within blog posts or forum threads or web pages on other websites.

I find that the longer my blog has been in existence and actively updated, the more pageloads I get.  When I started, I didn't even know about stats and never looked at them.  I've just looked at an overall view of my stats since I started blogging and my hit numbers run something like this:

From March 2007 when I started my blog, in the first 4 months I had pretty low numbers, maybe 50 pageloads per day.

5 months after that in July 2007 there was a huge jump, which I think was because of people adding me to their blogroll and blog review sites.

For the next 9 months between July 2007 and March 2008, I averaged approximately 150 pageloads per day.

In April 2008 there was a huge jump after I published my prostate milking resource, and I averaged approximately 250 pageloads per day until September 2008.

In October 2008 there was another jump which I think was a link from a chastity yahoo group, and I had 10,359 pageloads that month alone.

In December 2008 I had another jump, which I think was due to people in the local kink scene developing an interest in posts I was doing about them.

Since April 2009 I've averaged just over 300 pageloads per day from people all over the world.  Every few minutes somebody looks at my blog, and as of the time of this post the total number of pageloads I've had is approximately 147,585.

Good question, that was an interesting trip down my stats memory lane.  :)  I hope that was helpful?

You can also list your blog on relevant search thingies like adult blog hub or sex blogzilla.  If you submit entries to sugasm you have to post (and therefore be posted in return) the list of entries which can help people find your blog.  Also adding other blogs you like often means that others will list yours in return.  That's what I do.  There's also photos blogs like Tits for Troops or le Chargin where you could submit a photo to and that could attract new readers.  Technorati is good for knowing who has linked to you etc and statcounter can be used to get stats.  Although blogger/google probably have their own version now.

The more you post and list on ABH the better, you could even get into the top 20 list (which I fail miserably at!)

I don't use either ABH or sex blogzilla.  ABH at least has a search feature, although it looks to me more like an advertising centre with bloggers as a captive audience instead of a place for readers to go to find blogs.

Sex Blogzilla doesn't even have a search function, so I'm suspecting that it is solely to advertise to bloggers.

I also notice you don't have many images in your posts.  I frequently include at least one image to illustrate a post at the top, and that will attract image searches if you name the images appropriately.

Since by far most of the hits I get are from internet searches, I would say that using SEO guidelines to optimise your blog will be by far the most efficient way to increase your visibility.  I am suspicious of link sites for bloggers which have too many ads on them and a poor search facility as both ABH and Sex Blogzilla have.  If you want to see what a real blog link site looks like, Jane's Guide is an excellent example:

    http://www.janesguide.com/

You can submit your own blog to the guide for consideration, but they have a huge backlog of sites to get through, so be aware that it can take over a year before they get around to reviewing and listing you.

Here are some SEO links to get you started:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_search_optimization

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=seo+basics

Good luck, I hope you get loads of readers!  :)

Weird, I get most of my referrals from ABH.  Don't worry Lubyanka, it's one I can say that is reliable and won't give you any hassle!  I use it for finding new blogs too as well as links from other blogs.  It becomes a bit of a community.  I was reviewed by janesguide and got a good review, although they did criticise me for not posting enough!  Which is fair enough because I don't.  I seriously need to actually start writing some stuff.  I'm relying on pics atm.

Yeah I had started thinking about including some pics, which is in the pipeline so to speak. Will definately read up more on the SEO stuff, when my head is functioning better (had an.. interesting/emotional day today) and see how it goes. I am blogging with a little more regularity these days than I had formerly, which Im pleased with, and will remember to keep ABH up to date too :)

Would l be right in thinking you can attract visits by including on your blog certain unusual word couplings like for example only  metre long dong sex encounters or  similar, the actual test of interest then maybe the number of repeat visits a site attaracts. I have thought of writing the history of erotic activities l have indulged in over my years, erotic l certainly considered them, but would others agree???.... yep l am a vain creature and wouldn't want to be labelled an oddity!!! well not really ha ha.... but l think l may well be!!!!

It isn't about unusual word groupings, it's about including certain keywords.  Word groupings such as you described is called keyword spamming which is a common tactic for some sites.  But if it is irrelevant to the site and/or if it is repeated all over the pages ad infinitum, then google considers that to be spam or unethical traffic soliciting or something and will remove such sites from its search results.

The principles of SEO are about making the site better and easier to use for visitors, and that's why the crawlers look for such features.

Really the best way to build followers and increase readership is to network more - take part in HNT and leave A LOT of comments so people can find your blog and hopefully subscribe to it or keep coming back for more.

That said, I get a stupid amount of hits from search engines due to my 'how to get laid at university' posts!

Well there you go Jake, guess that's the upside of being of the generation who are away from home for the first time, while l'm not quite of the generation of the WW1 veterans, l would potentially be competing for the affections of a generation who, if Facebook is anything to go by, simply do not subscribe to the notion of the internet- mine could thus be a solitary existence- collective awww sign not in evidence!!! ha ha.

Still l think it may be worth persevering with and developing my literary talents, careful choice of soft focus and backlingthing as well no doubt, still pondering whether or not the site should benefit from the properties of a magnifying glass!!!!

Just wondering Lubyanka, are you proud of the way your blog has worked out over the last year or so?

Is there anything you would change or ever regretted publishing on it?

In that you appear to have suffered personal distress, lost friends and become unwelcome in your local kink community as a direct result of your blogging. I'm just wondering if you're happy with the direction your blog took, was it worth it all and if there was anything you would have done differently with the benefit of hindsight looking back?

DavidBedlam - Since discussing my blog posts about the Irish kink community is probably off topic for this forum, please see my blog if you're interested in my response to your query:
