Good day to you ladies and gentlemen!

November's Book of the Month is a thrashing read - The True Confessions of a London Spank Daddy.

Ever since Max Mosley won his privacy case against the News of the World, BDSM has become widely talked about in the media and even more popular than before!

Author Peter Jones (no, not the Dragon's Den business mogul!) has been in demand since the sadomasochism case, particularly as he's considered the UK's leading authority on all things kinky.

In the book, he describes his encounters with ordinary women ranging from professional types such as vets, policewomen and personal assistants to housewives and mothers, who are all in need of indulging their secret spanking fantasies!

What did you like or dislike about The True Confessions of a London Spank Daddy?

I liked the fact that it's a true story, and a real eye opener. There was nothing about it I disliked!

Was this your first encounter with heavy spanking, caning and punishment within erotica?

No, not at all. I've read tons of these kinds of books, but up until now, they've all been fiction!

What attracted you to the book - the spanking theme or the sex scenes?

The spanking - until you start reading you don't realise just how much it is about the spanking itself in this book, not sex.

Who was your favourite client in the book?

The lesbians with the schoolgirl fantasy.

Have you read any confessional style sex books before?

Yes, lots! Suzanne Portnoy, Belle du Jour, Tracy Quan, etc, etc.

Would you consider visiting a Spank Daddy yourself or letting a partner spank you?

I wouldn't visit a Spank Daddy because spanking for me is very much about the sex and arousal, so I wouldn't like to be spanked and then not fucked directly afterwards! And yes I would let my partner spank me, and he has.

How do you feel the stories rate in the dirtiness stakes compared to fictional erotica?

The stories aren't arousing in the same way because they're not told as stories, it's just a relation of what happened, so feelings and emotions aren't discussed at length like in a fictional story. However, it still got me hot under the collar in some places!

I adored this book!  Even though I've only a mild interest in hanky spanky, this was a great insight in to 'another world', and also you can't help but warm to the author.

I especially love the idea of hiring a Spank Daddy as a diet aid - sounds far more fun than the gym or Weight Watchers!

Well, I think the cover is the first port of call for information about any book.  I think it's the responsibility of the publisher to ensure that the cover accurately reflects the content of the book.  Would it be fair to call a book about flower arranging something like "The Ordinary Person's Guide to Sexually Transmitted Infections"?  I don't think it's unreasonable for a person to base their first impressions of a book on the cover.  How else are people supposed to decide if they want to learn more about a specific book?

I don't like covers which seem deliberately misleading about the theme of the content, whether through negligence or any other reason.  A fisting book with a woman (mostly in shadow) on the cover, and a gloved hand, I mean, how is a person supposed to tell it's a book primarily about fisting women in the vagina, as opposed to women doing the fisting of whatever orifice?  Plus, the book was written by a male top whose first name is Kim, and there's no way to tell by name if the author is definitively one gender or another or what role they are adopting.

At least the Spank Daddy book specified the nature of the gendered material in the title so I don't have to waste my money, so full credit there.  I don't think it's unreasonable to make a personal decision to reject a book based on the fact that I am not attracted to nor aroused by male tops spanking bottoms.  And I made that decision based on the title and on the article Ruth linked to.  How else am I supposed to decide?

So I'd like to say that I think that judging a book by its cover is a reasonable thing to do, and if a cover is unclear and/or misleading, then it isn't our fault.

So there!  :)

Ooh, I love a bit of heated debate first thing on a Monday!

No problem if you don't like the idea or the theme of the book, guys!   Not sure how you think the cover of Spank Daddy is misleading, though????  You have a woman with 'blushing cheeks' , with a silhouette of Spank Daddy in the background - not easy to confuse with a cookery book?

Like I said, I really enjoyed the book.  I liked the fact that it wasn't a 'pure sex' book like the ones I'd usually read, and I warmed to Spank Daddy's character, too.

As for your comment that you "deeply wish there was much more realistic and quality material out there featuring dominant women and submissive men," Lubyanka, I think the answer is simple.  You're a very good writer - go write it!

Ruth has said just what I was going to say. Anyone can see that you can put a few words together on the page, Lubyanka. Please write it yourself - we would like to read it. Otherwise we'll never know just what is going on in that mysterious mind!

Ruth and walrus, thank you very much for your kind words.  It's so nice to start a Monday morning with a smile.  :)

Ruth, I didn't think the cover of Spank Daddy was misleading, I haven't seen the cover.  I was (ranting) I mean talking about the cover of the Fisting book I referred to (which I didn't get from you, but which you sell, and for which I will be writing a review), and about some covers in general.  Most erotica has women of some kind on the covers no matter what role they're supposed to be in, because most erotica is targeted at the male paying customer.  I was trying to point out to sublimelonglegs that "judging a book by its cover" is actually a reasonable thing to do.

As for writing some erotica which I myself would enjoy - don't think I haven't considered it!  Mostly what I was trying to say is that I don't think it's fair to expect every consumer to create their own product to consume, and indeed most don't have to, because products which meet their needs are already provided by others.  I may well write a book of erotica which turns me on, but

Imagine if there were only sex toys out there which were designed for men to use, and only a few really bad, expensive, poorly made toys designed with women in mind.  Imagine if women had to make their own sex toys every time they wanted one.  I don't think it would be fair to expect women to make their own sex toys just because nobody else bothered.  If you look at the commercially available porn, I think it really fits into that category of poorly made, badly designed material which really doesn't on the whole do much for most women, primarily because it's designed for the male consumer.

My point is that I resent having to write my own erotica just so that I can have some erotica which turns me on, do you see?  It is a lot of effort to go through just to have what essentially would be another sex toy, you know?

As for writing my own erotica, you know, I might just do that.  My problems with that at the moment are that I could really do with the cash, and I know from my music experience that the best art is created because the artist had something specific they wanted to express.  I know that art created specifically to make money is never as good.  On the other hand, I know I have a lot I want to express, and I know that I can express it well.

Based on this thread, I might well make a start, since the other, not-at-all-erotic book I'm working on is a bit stuck at the moment, and will remain so until I work out a way to get more information for it.

(I did consider applying for Carly's job when it was advertised, but I really didn't want to move to Bath)

What I'd like to know is, if I wrote an erotic book from my own perspective, would LoveHoney (in principle) be likely to have any interest in selling it?  If LoveHoney were to express some serious interest to me, I certainly would feel encouraged.  I'd rather not got to all that trouble of writing the damned thing and then have my efforts sit around gathering dust whilst I schlepped it about to publishers trying to get it published.  If I started out with an interested retailer, I think that would help.  I mean, it's really easy to tell somebody else to go do something, heh.  ;)  A little support like that would be so welcome.  :)

Even if LoveHoney weren't interested, I might still make a start.  I'll see if I can't think of a suitable theme or idea to build on.  I'll let you know if I find one.

Thank you for the encouragement, and for the compliments.  :)

If you re-read what I wrote, you'll see that I am not actually asking LoveHoney for a publishing deal, I am asking them if they'd be interested in selling it, if it were to be published.

And what would be the point of writing a book, which you yourself expressed interest in, if it then sits around unpublished?  You were expecting me to write a book and publish it at my own expense, free of charge, with no recompense for my efforts, maybe?  Are you saying that just because it's art, it does not deserve the same financial support as other work?

What am I supposed to be arguing both ways?  Both ways of what?  What ways?

As I said above, it's really easy to tell somebody else to go off and do something.  Try doing it yourself - that's a lot harder.

And I think that this is a bit off topic for this thread.

Depends on the quality of your book Lubyanka, and whether there is a demand for the subject matter.

Think you were unduly harsh on poor Walrus, for no good reason.

That's a good point, Ruth.  What would you need to make a decision?  A synopsis, outline, or something else?

I've made the tiniest of starts:

"Where am I?"

The ceiling looked blurry and unfamiliar through my groggily waking eyes.  I tried to orient myself, moving my eyes slowly, exploring the ceiling, sliding across to where it met the wall, easing my eyes down the wall, gradually turning my head as I went.  I heard bed linen rustle underneath my head.  I felt the squooshy pillow yield in the wake of my movements.  My gaze travelled across the room until it stopped at the first object of interest - a duvet-covered lump where my feet should be.  Except this lump was way bigger than any reasonable feet had a right to be.

And then I remembered, and smiled to myself.

The typical way for us to choose our books is as follows:

1) Publishers send us mailing lists and copies of key titles

2) We read through them, look at which type of titles/subjects are popular, and if the book fits with that we'll get it.

Thank you for the information.  I suppose if I do it, I'd just do it the normal way then, complete the thing, try to get it published (or publish it myself), and then let the publishers sell it (or try to sell it myself some way).

Thought it was time to get this thread back on topic, so here's a story from one of Spank Daddy's clients:

Ginny,  a 38-year-old divorced mother with a 16-year-old daughter living in north London.

“I was fat, recently divorced and approaching 40 when I first met the Spank Daddy.

I was three stone overweight and desperate to lose the excess flab to get back on the dating scene.

The only way I could stick to my diet was the threat of a good caning from Peter.

In six weeks I lost more than a stone, my weight was down to 11 stone.

By the time I went on holiday that August the regular spanking and sex sessions had paid off,  I was down to my target weight of nine and a half stone and I had a new boyfriend.

I’m now eight stone ten lb, fitter than ever before and I’m engaged to be married. I no longer see my Spank Daddy, but I know he’s there if I ever return to the junk food.”

What did you like or dislike about The True Confessions of a London Spank Daddy?

Spank Daddy gives a great factual insight in to spanking as a fetish, which I really enjoyed.  It's far more about what the people involved get from it, so it's not puffed up with titilation (which I liked, but some people might not.)

Was this your first encounter with heavy spanking, caning and punishment within erotica?

No.  I've come across spanking before, but never written about in this style.

What attracted you to the book - the spanking theme or the sex scenes?

I was attracted by the theme, and the opportunity to find out more about the whole Spank Daddy set up.  it gave me the chance to be a voyeur, without having to pay Peter Jones's standard fee!

Who was your favourite client in the book?

I liked Jill - she seemed to get exactly what she wanted, and the end of the chapter reminds you that she is living out a fantasy.

Have you read any confessional style sex books before?

I've read Girl With A One Track Mind and Belle De Jour - but this was very different. It's nice to see a man getting in to the sex confessional writing scence.

Would you consider visiting a Spank Daddy yourself or letting a partner spank you?

I'd love to meet Peter Jones - purely for research, of course ;-)  I'm certainly not against a bit of hany panky spanking, either.

How do you feel the stories rate in the dirtiness stakes compared to fictional erotica?

If you're looking for a book to get off to in a hurry, then this might not be for you.  It's erotic, but in a much more subtle way than say a Black Lace Quickies book.  It will, however, stimulate your mind!
