Porn - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Porn is well discussed in the blogosphere, with information readily available on everything from the best scenes to how to become a porn star.

In fact, some of the most frequently asked questions to our experts and on the Lovehoney forums revolve around porn which shows, yet again, that it is a popular subject with many issues surrounding it.

    One of Lovehoney’s fans asked:

“My boyfriend watches a lot of porn and I think it’s starting to rub off on our sex life. He keeps bringing weird moves that he’s seen online into the bedroom and I’m not sure what to make of it. Help!?”

Rather than just point to our regular tried-and-tested advice, we thought we’d get the opinion of fabulous male sex blogger, Jake of Facts and Friction, to help out with this tricky situation...

Jake of Facts and Friction explains:

Porn can be great fun, and we all know it certainly has its uses, but it's important for everyone to remember that porn scenes are much more of just a visual performance than a how-to guide. With this in mind, lets discuss what porn can teach everyone, and what should stay firmly behind the screens...

    The Good

    • Helping communication. Porn can act as an easy way to introduce the idea of trying new things to your partner without having to bring it up out of the blue. If you watch porn with your partner already then watching a scene with a particular interest to you can be a good way to gauge his or her opinion.

    • Be My Toy Boy DVD
    • Foreplay. Watching erotic films together while spooning in bed can be a great way to make an already hot atmosphere even more frenzied. Remember, porn isn't all just plastic blondes being impaled by impossibly large and muscular men, there's a whole variety of erotic films out there for you to experiment with. Try searching online for the best erotic films or cinematic sex scenes.

    • Toy recommendations. One example of a pioneer in good porn is the writer, director and performer Tristan Taormino who has produced and starred in titles such as Vivid's CHEMISTRY series and her own Expert Guides series to Anal, Oral and G-Spot sex. In many of her scenes where sex toys are used Tristan includes the name of the toy, which is perfect if you see something you like the look of.

    • Private Thoughts
    • Some techniques. Emphasis on the 'some'... While there's a lot of things in porn that don't translate to real life very well, there are some porn staples that are classics for a reason. One of these is every gentleman's favourite, the saucy glance upward from a girl while she's going down on a guy. It may seem cheesy or clichéd, but if you can pull it off, it's an almost sure-fire winner.

    The Bad

    • Sex, for showiness's sake. Acrobatic positions that look great fun, but in reality appear to be physically impossible are one thing, but what really irks me is the way cunninglingus scenes are filmed with the guy sticking his tongue out as far as he can. In porn it's to get a better view of the tongue-to-clit contact, but try it in reality for more than ten minutes and it'll feel as if your tongue's about to fall off. For best results, you want to get your mouth, lips and tongue a whole lot closer...

    • What Men Want DVD
    • That slapping your cock repeatedly on her cheeks move that is favoured by the more aggressive porn stars. I can't even find an explanation for this. I guess it's to keep the guy hard, but I can't imagine it does much for the girl - besides making her wonder what on earth he thinks he's doing...

    • Ass-to-mouth, apparently defined in hardcore pornography since the mid-1990s and affectionately known to the Scottish as Arse-to-Gob (thank you Wikipedia). Do I really need to say anything?

    The Ugly

    • Leg Avenue Polka Dot Knee SocksGuys wearing socks, and nothing else. The stripping of socks can be a bit of a fiddly pain as, especially for guys, it's very hard to make look sexy. Some parts of the porn industry seem to have conveniently done away with this problem entirely by simply leaving the male performer naked, except for his pair of little black socks. This issue is particularly poignant for me, as due to what I can only blame on over-excitedness, I almost lost my virginity wearing nothing but socks. Needless to say, it's not a good look.

So, while porn is great for watching together (whether it's for ideas, or just to laugh at all the porn clichés), it shouldn't be your first port of call for fine-honing your bedroom finesse. Far more useful for that would be a book from Lovehoney's range of Better Sex Books, or browsing some expert's sex blogs.

Ah yes, I could understand the face cheeks thing, but I meant slapping on her butt cheeks! My fault though - I forgot to specify that I meant those cheeks!
