Porn, Play Rooms and Petra Joy - The Exclusive Interview!

Female-friendly porn is a highly appreciated form of erotic art, yet it still seems off the radar for many people.

One of the women who specialises in female-friendly porn, and is continuing to break-down porn clichés and mainstream expectations, is Petra Joy.

Petra has been working in the erotic film industry for many years and with each movie she makes, she tears up the rule book even further in order to give women exactly what they want - gorgeous couplings, real bodies and hot sex.

Petra recently launched The Joy Awards - an innovative way of finding new, exciting and upcoming female erotic filmmakers who aren't afraid to capture what really turns them on.

The Joy Awards competition is open to all first-time female filmmakers and has many amazing prizes including a pjur goodie bag and the opportunity to be featured in the upcoming compilation DVD 'Her Porn, Volume Two'.

With all this excitement surrounding Petra and The Joy Awards, we thought we'd better get an interview in quickly before she gets swamped under by fabulous female porn films!

Carly Drew: Hi Petra, let's start with a little introduction to you and your fantastic job. How would you describe what you do?
Petra Joy: I am an erotic filmmaker, photographer and writer unveiling female fantasies and focusing on female pleasure.

    CD
: What sort of training, if any, did you do to land your job as an erotic filmmaker?
    PJ
: I have an MA in film studies and worked for over 20 years as a freelance producer/director/camerawoman for television. I have always been self employed. I still shoot the odd promo or TV documentary and I often write articles and shoot photographs for magazines such as "Forum" and for various book publishers. But my favourite work is shooting my erotic films and teaching porn workshops. The thing is before I shoot an erotic film, I have to raise the money first which is quite difficult and stressful at times.

Petra Joy - The Joy AwardsCD: What was the first job you worked on in the porn industry?
PJ: I do not really consider myself part of the "porn industry", as I do not stick to all the classic porn rules but choose to break them. I am an independent producer and director creating explicit erotic films from a female perspective. Because I finance my films myself, I have the luxury of artistic freedom.

    CD
: How do men react to your 'female-friendly' porn?
    PJ
: All the men who have spoken to me after film festivals and seminars or who have written to me have said that they love my films. Many men are bored with the repetitiveness of mainstream porn and the distorted image those films create of female and male sexuality. Luckily some men want to understand what really turns women on and through watching my films they might discover some new things...

CD: Do you receive much criticism for having limits and boundaries (not including forced fellatio, extreme anal sex or cum shots in the woman's face) in your porn?
PJ: No not really. My viewers, especially the female ones, really appreciate that I do not show these things as they can be perceived as degrading towards women. The porn industry is surprised that my films are popular even though I do not copy some porn clichés but they don't criticise me but just keep doing what they have always done...

It is lovely to see though that some forward-thinking companies like Lovehoney and pjur embrace my messages and style and sponsor me. Last year Lovehoney and pjur sponsored my Erotica goodie bags with a vibrating mini toy and lube samples and these sensual goodie bags went down a storm with the women. I hope for further creative co-operations at this year's Erotica where I will be running a "sluts and goddesses" photo booth for women.

Petra Joy - Filmmaker extraordinaire!CD: Let's talk about The Joy Awards 2009, where did the idea come from?
PJ: I have been running my workshops "How to make your own creative porn" for women all over Europe for a couple of years now and they are always really popular. I want to empower as many women as possible to get behind the camera and turn the "reader's wives" clichés upside down. It will be great if more and more women express themselves with erotic films and we have more male objects of female desire. Until recently there has hardly been a pin-up culture for women - compared to all the images and films produced for straight and gay men - so we have a lot of catching up to do... I hope many women will grab their camcorder or mobile phones and have a play to share what they find erotic.

    CD
: How did pjur end up getting involved with the awards?
    PJ
: I am a big fan of good quality lube and always use it in private play and in my films. Pjur sponsored my latest film release "Her Porn" with lube sachets of their special lube "for women". When I saw them at a recent trade show I told them about my idea and they were really excited about it and decided to give the awards financial backing which I am really grateful for. I am very proud that the winners will not just get a lovely trophy (designed by me) but also fantastic prize money, a big pjur goodie bag and sponsorship towards travel costs to the awards ceremony.

    CD
: What tips can you give to women planning on making their own film for the competition?
    PJ
: Free your mind form everything you have ever seen in any porn - whether you liked it or not - and find your own style! Don't worry too much if you have never made a film before. The jury is not after technical perfection but innovative and creative ideas to show sex und sensuality from a female perspective. Just enjoy yourself and have a play with your objects of desire. You can be as soft or explicit as you like. Vanilla or fetish, straight or queer - if you can dream it, you can shoot it!

Petra Joy's Feeling ItCD: I've just noticed that you've used the bathroom at the Play Room in the Pelirocco in one of your films - I stayed there not long ago and loved it! What would you say was a good location to film porn in?
    PJ
: We actually shot in the "Durex Lounge" which has a massive round bed above which a huge mirror hangs. We shot a really hot group sex scene there and the suite was perfect, as it is almost like a stage set. I still hope to stay there one day with my boyfriend and just enjoy...

CD: What films would you recommend people watch for inspiration?
    PJ
: I recently brought out a compilation called "Her Porn" which features 14 short films from 7 female filmmakers. This is a great introduction to porn from a female perspective. In it I feature some of the best female directors of the last decade whose work I truly admire such as Candida Royalle, Marianna Beck or Maria Beatty. Of course I whole-heartedly recommend my films "Sexual Sushi", "Female Fantasies" and "Feeling it" or the 18 rated versions "Sensual Seduction" and "Feeling it". These films show a great variety of play scenes and performers, focus on female pleasure, feature "guy candy" and therefore make great viewing for women or couples.

    CD
: Finally, what do you think of the use of sex toys in erotic films?
    PJ
: I like it if they are stylish toys that do not just look good but really do work for her and him. I do not like it when toys are used just for the sake of it and performers are simply going through the motions. I tend to invest in upmarket toys rather than the usual jelly bunny for a shoot to provide some inspiration. I have used some stunning stainless steel toys from Njoy or the P-vibe range which includes a cock-ring with a vibrating silver bullet and a cigar-shaped, gold-plated and waterproof vibrator which is ideal for clitoral or anal stimulation. I also like to show male prostate stimulation with toys that were made for boys.

CD: Thanks so much for your interview Petra, I look forward to seeing the results of The Joy Awards competition soon!
