So you're looking for a vibrator but not sure where to start in our vibrators category? With a vast array of shapes, sizes, designs and functions, our vibrators section can be confusing for those looking to buy their first vibe.

This guide will teach you how to tell a bullet from a butterfly vibe and help you choose the vibrators that will best enhance masturbation and sex with your partner.

Bullet Vibrators

The most popular choice for a first toy and ideal for couples, these miniature vibrators are built for precision and their name comes from their resemblance to spitzer bullets in size and shape. Because they're usually 2-3 inches long, they usually use smaller LR44 watch batteries or N batteries but there are rechargeable varieties like the Lelo Mia. Bullet vibes are ideal for women who are looking for direct clitoral stimulation during masturbation or sex. The small size of bullet vibes makes them ideal for use while having penetrative sex without causing obstruction to either partner.

Butterfly Vibrators

Also known as strap-on vibrators, these vibes are worn a bit like you would wear a pair knickers to give hands-free vibrating stimulation directly to your clitoris. Butterfly vibrators get their name from the shape of the clitoral stimulator which is shaped like a butterfly with its wings spread. Some butterfly vibrators also have an insertable shaft to offer simultaneous internal and external stimulation. Butterfly vibrators are good for masturbation or use during sex.

Start with: Vibrating Knicker Critter Clitoral Arouser Strap-On (£23.99)

Classic Vibrators

These vibrators offer an insertable phallic shape in a discreet style. They can be used for direct clitoral stimulation but are designed primarily for insertion. These types of vibrators were originally marketed as personal massagers and their suggested use was soothing aches and pains. Classic vibrators offer an inexpensive way to experiment with insertable vibrators and are often multispeed with a twist-base operation.

Start with: BASIC Sex Toys Lady Lustfinger Mini Vibrator (£4.99)

Clitoral Vibrators

Lovehoney Powerful Pocket VibratorThe term ‘clitoral vibrator’ refers to any vibrator designed with stimulating the clitoris as its main aim. Their shapes are tailored for direct clitoral stimulation and offer shapes from a simple point-like tip to a cup that surrounds the clitoris. Clitoral vibrators tend to be larger than bullet vibrators to accommodate larger batteries and bigger motors, making them more powerful. They can also be used to stimulate a larger area, making them great for grinding up against.

Start with: Lovehoney Powerful Pocket Vibrator (£5.99)

Double Ended Vibrators

Toy Joy Strapless Vibrating Double DildoYou’ve heard of double dildos, now meet the double vibrator. These double enders also contain vibrating motors or have a slot for a vibrating bullet to make them quiver and shake. Perfect for sharing, double-ended vibrators prove that two heads are better than one when it comes to enjoying a vibrator, even if you decide to hog it all to yourself.

Start with: Toy Joy Strapless Vibrating Double Dildo (£26.99)

Extra Quiet Vibrators

Tracey Cox Supersex Bullet VibratorSssshhhh! These vibrators are the quietest that we sell. If you share a house, have children or live at home with your family then discretion is going to be important to you. If you want maximum pleasure with minimum noise then shop from our selection of extra-quiet vibrators.

Start with: Tracey Cox Supersex Bullet Vibrator (£9.99)

Finger Vibrators

BASIC Sex Toys Vibrating Finger RingThese vibrators are designed to slide over your finger to offer you the best-possible control over your pleasure. Finger vibrators are usually tiny bullet vibrators mounted in a textured sleeve that can be worn as a ring or simply slide over your fingertip. Either you or your partner can wear a finger vibrator to enhance penetrative sex, allowing you to stimulate the clitoris without having to hold onto a bullet which can be slippery work when there’s lube involved.

Start with: BASIC Sex Toys Vibrating Finger Ring (£2.99)

Glass Vibrators

Icicles No 4 Vibrating Mini Teaser Glass WandYou’ve heard of glass dildos but glass vibrators are a newcomer to the market. There are two types of glass vibrator - those with bullet vibrators that slot into dildo and those that are blown to be hollow without compromising structural strength. The latter have a vibrating motor fitted inside the shaft just like a normal vibrator, but both offer a cool glass finish with a high-powered buzz. Waterproof glass vibes can be cooled in the fridge or heated in hot water to offer temperature variation which is often favoured by users of glass dildos.

Start with: Icicles No 4 Vibrating Mini Teaser Glass Wand (£32.99)

G-Spot Vibrators

Slimline G-Spot VibratorThese curvy vibes are designed to stimulate the most sensitive part of the vagina - the G-spot - during penetration. G-spot vibrators usually feature an upward curve and a girthy head to ensure maximum stimulation for this sensitive spot. G-spot stimulation is associated with female ejaculation or squirting, making G-spot vibrators a popular way to experiment.

Start with: Slimline G-Spot Vibrator (£12.99)

Jelly Vibrators

Pink Clitoral Jelly Vibrator 8 InchThese flexible, squishy vibrators are made from the classic sex toy material jelly rubber. Jelly rubber is easy to maintain and is often brightly coloured with pink being the most common colour. Jelly rubber is durable and easily moulded. It’s also less expensive than other sex toy materials meaning jelly rubber vibrators usually cost much less.

Start with: Pink Clitoral Jelly Vibrator 8 Inch (£9.99)

Luxury Vibrators

Lelo Mia Rechargeable VibratorIf you want the best in sex toy technology and the best sex toy materials then opt for one of our luxury vibrators. These sleek sex toys are designed to look and feel incredible and are often purchased to replace a cheaper vibrator as an upgrade. If you’ve loved and lost a vibe and you’re looking for an improved version then opt for a luxury sex toy. They’re designed to last longer than less expensive sex toys and most of them are rechargeable, meaning no more spending on expensive batteries.

Start with: Lelo Mia Rechargeable Vibrator (£34.99)

Magic Wand Vibrators

Bodywand Magic Wand Vibrator with Exclusive UK Plug These vibrators were originally marketed to be used to relieve back and neck pain but make incredible clitoral stimulators, a discovery that boosted sales of this kind of vibrator the world over. They boast some of the most powerful vibrations sex toys have to offer. Wand vibrators have a large handle topped by a large squeezy head that contains a powerful vibrating motor. Magic wand vibrators were originally powered by the mains, meaning that you couldn’t stray too far from the power socket. Wands are now available in wireless versions, either rechargeable or powered by C batteries.

Start with: Bodywand Magic Wand Vibrator (£59.99)

Mains & Rechargeable Vibrators

Mains powered and rechargeable vibrators offer longer lasting and more powerful vibrations than those powered by disposable batteries. That power comes at a lesser price too as there’s no need to buy replacement batteries to keep them running.

Start with: We-Vibe II Clitoral and G-Spot Vibrator (£64.99)

Massager Vibrators

Tracey Cox Supersex Massager VibratorThese palm-sized vibrators allow you to give your partner a relaxing and erotic massage. Start with: BASIC Sex Toys Lady Lustfinger Mini Vibrator (£4.99)

Rabbit Vibrators

Lovehoney Jessica Rabbit 2.0 Rabbit VibratorThe all-singing, all-dancing vibrator. Rabbit vibrators come in a variety of styles but they all have one thing in common - a clitoral stimulator that branches away from the main shaft, allowing for simultaneous clitoral and internal stimulation. Some rabbit vibrators include a special rotating or thrusting motor in the upper shaft that allows the tip of the shaft to spin in circles, rock from side to side or thrust upward to better stimulate the sensations of penetrative sex. This prevents the need to move the vibrator once it has been inserted and ensures clitoral contact is never lost.

Start with: Lovehoney Jessica Rabbit 2.0 Rabbit Vibrators (£20.00)

Realistic Dildo Vibrators

Start with: Lovehoney 10 Function Remote Control Dream Egg 2.0 Vibrator (£26.99)

Silicone Vibrators

Silicone vibrators are incredibly versatile, retain shape, have no taste or smell, are easy to keep clean and ensure a body-safe experience. Start with: Lovehoney Love Bunny Vibrating Bullet Rabbit (£14.99)

Vibrating Love Eggs

BASIC Sex Toys Wickedly Powerful Orgasmic Love EggThese insertable toys are similar sizes and shapes to Kegel exercisers but they have a vibrating motor nestled inside instead of weights. Some love eggs have a wired controller whereas others operate via a remote control, allowing you to discreetly indulge in a little public play. Start with: BASIC Sex Toys Wickedly Powerful Orgasmic Love Egg (£6.99)

    Hi,

I hope you can help me. Up until approximately 2 years ago I purchased my vibrators from Ann Summers. Suddenly they stopped stocking the model I used to buy. I have tried other expensive models since, but sadly I find they are very dissapointing.

What set the original model apart was the high frequency of the vibration in the rabbit ears. I have not managed to find a model which vibrates at the frequency of the discontinued model. Advertisers do not concentrate on the frequency of vibration which in my opinion is the most important characteristic of the vibrator.

Can you help in identifying a model which vibrates at high frequency.

Would love to be a tester of your products.

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Caroline.

You may want to check out our fabulous Jessica Rabbit 2.0 Vibrator which is so powerful that many women won't use anything else to get them off: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14099

Alternatively, you may want to try something a bit different to a rabbit. Two of the most powerful vibrators in our collection are the Hitachi Magic Wand (http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=1993) and the very own LoveHoney Silencer (http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=287).

  • Anna: June 17, 2009 11:05

I have received my LoveHoney Bang Bang Bullet, and it doesn't do anything for me, even when I use it on my clitoris. I bought it as I'm told self-pleasure is the way to orgasming during sex. My partner and I have been together for two years, but didn't have sex for one year. Before we did, I could fantasise and this sometimes led to an orgasm. Now, however, orgasms are a no-show even though we experiment and the results are very pleasurable. There have been a couple of close times, and I haven't the heart to tell him that I've never orgasmed with him. (We're each others first partners) I want to orgasm with him, but touching myself never really worked so I decided to give a vibrator a go.

As a first-timer, is there anything I should be doing with it? At the moment it just feels like something vibrating inside me.

Also any tips of bringing it up with him?

    Hi,

I'm looking to buy my first vibrator. I'm recently single and want to please myself but I don't know where to start! What should I be looking for as a beginner/?

  • Susan: June 25, 2009 21:27

hi, ive never used a vibrator before but am about to have radiotherapy treatment for cancer that will result in long term dryness and shrivelling of the vagina. i will be given dilators to keep it open and have been told that regular sex will help too. as my husband somethimes works away i thought i might as well have the pleasure of a vibrator to keep me 'open' rather than the boring dilators. please can you recommend a vibrator that is good for internal use as well as external and a lube that wont aggravate my skin, im looking for something like ky jelly but with a bit more tingle to it ;o).

  • LoveHoney - Carly: June 26, 2009 10:49

    Hi Ellie,

If you read the help given above, you'll find lots of excellent advice about first time vibes! The blog gives top tips and descriptions of each type of toy - from realistic to miniature - so you're sure to find one you like!

Many people like clitoral vibrators as they provide a quick and easy, yet amazingly sensual way to orgasm, so check out our special section with lots of Sale bargains here on LoveHoney: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/store.cfm?cat=61

  • LoveHoney - Carly: June 26, 2009 10:58

    Hi Susan,

Many tingle lubricants contain L'Arginine and glycerin which can often aggravate sensitive skin. However, Sliquid have created a wonderful range of lubes that do not contain L'Arginine, glycein or parabens and are therefore skin safe! I'd highly recommend Sliquid Sassy as it lasts for ages, feels silky smooth and always has a delightfully cool nature to it - http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=11373

As for first time vibes that can be used internally and externally, you should first take a look at our Classic Vibrators range: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/store.cfm?cat=5644
These are designed to tease the clitoris but are the right shape for insertion soon. They come in lots of sizes, shapes, colours, speeds and functions, so you're sure to find something you like.

If you want clitoral and vaginal stimulation at the same time then you need a Rabbit Vibrator! The Jessica Rabbit G-Spot Vibrator is ideal as it's slim, sexy, has multiple functions and provides sensual pleasure to both of your hot spots simultaneously: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=15336

    Good lucka dn have fun!

  • Katie: September 02, 2009 03:56

Hi, i have had 2 vibrators, one which is still working but the other recently broke. im finding that generally they do not have strong enough vibrations, and were wondering which u can suggest for really powerful clitoral stimulation as well as my g-spot, which i hav had difficulty stimulating.
    Thanks
    Katie

  • LoveHoney - Carly: September 02, 2009 08:43

For super strong vibrators, take a look at the mains powered section' As these run off normal electricity, they're amazingly stimulating:
    http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/store.cfm?cat=62

Similarly, why not take a look at the Vibratex Mystic Wand - it's the most powerful battery operated vibrator we've ever felt:

  • anahi: September 10, 2009 00:11

i am a married women and i want to get a vibrator cause i always wanted one, but the problem is my husban ddoesnt like them. what should i dop???

  • LoveHoney - Carly: September 10, 2009 08:55

    Hi anahi!

The key thing here is communication, communication, communication!

Men often get worried that sex toys will become a replacement for them or that the sex toy will do a better job than he can - you just need to reassure him that that's not the case.

Maybe have a calm but informal chat with your partner about vibrators, mentioning that a couple of your friends have them or that there was a study done recently that suggested that sex toys actually make relationships stronger. Find out why he doesn't like them and why he doesn't want you to have one. At the end of the day, it's your decision, but you need to show him that he can get in on the fun too by using it on you or having it used on him!

Check out this blog for more advice: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/blog/2008/06/27/introduce-vibrator-into-relationship/
